Cornwall. I can't imagine wanting to spend a week in Brighton with kids and I live here. Beaches are packed and not particularly nice and the place is full of drunk tourists and stag do's.

A whole county Vs a town with a pebble beach full of londoners. 🤔

I love Brighton but it would be Cornwall every time - much more to do for kids and proper sandy beaches.

Spent lots of time in both - Brighton's tolerable for a day, but wouldn't want to spend a lot more time there. At least with Cornwall you can drive somewhere else.

I've been to Cornwall quite a bit in the last week of August / first week of September - the weather's usually good and there are discounts to be had with both late bookings and post-August price drops (last week of school hols usually around 20% cheaper). A warning for Cornwall is it's big (compared to most counties, never mind Brighton) and therefore you really need to focus on an area - West, Central or East roughly in thirds and even then maybe North or South at least for the Eastern end. They're all good with loads to do. If you want action  and big beaches the North coast is good, South coast is more the domain of scenic gardens and pretty villages but still plenty of beaches. West is wild / out there and if you generally prefer open and 'hard to get to' spaces you'll love it bearing in mind nowhere in Cornwall is quiet in holiday season.

Lived in Brighton all of my younger life. I'd go to Cornwall.

We still keep a few places just for the locals 😉

This summed up my thoughts early in the thread.  I love Brighton but not for a family holiday

Cornwall all day long.

You can stay pretty much anywhere and be near beautiful beaches where you can while away hours.

Spent many happy hours down there.  https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/trencrom-hill-history# was a favourite, Carbis bay, Sennan and Kynance cove are probably my pick of the beaches.

Zennor is my left field suggestion for a place to go - I don't know why it's left such a mark on me all these years later, it's just a feeling *shudders*

Brighton.

Nah, not really 😉  Definitely Cornwall or Devon.

We've got family in both and Cornwall wins every time!

Depending on where you're going from, Knightshayes National Trust just near Tiverton makes a great stop en route 🙂

Try the North Devon coast. Especially Putsborough sands beach between Woolacombe & Croyde. Huge sandy beach with boulders, rock pools , safe easy bodyboarding and a great beach top cafe if the weather turns. Plus it’s 2 hrs less drive than Cornwall.

whilst Brighton on its own would be an odd place to go for a whole week, you could easily stay in a nice village in sussex and day trip around to lots of places (including Brighton, and if you fancied it a day out in london) to make a nice week of it. its different to cornwall, but travel times would be shorter and just as much for kids

I live nr Brighton...

So Brighton it is!

TBH Cornwall is 5 house away from anywhere ... and it is lovely when the sun shines and tourists aren't there ...

But in August .... hmmm.  Kind of crowded, with the set who bought 2nd homes before Norfolk became trendy ...

It depends what you want to do ... but I assume we can compare the whole country of Sussex to Cornwall?

Eastbourne Airshow, the South Downs, the South Downs and Weald working museum, Goodwood, the beach, Burling Gap, Rottingdean Beach ( which is sandy after high tide), Beachy Head ( just in case it isn't going well :-)), Arundel Castle, the legendary Drusillas, Lewes, Harvey's Brewery, the North Laines, Rye, Camber Sands, West Wittering, etc etc

Mind you we do have Worthing and Hastings as well...

Brighton is a great place to live but not really a holiday destination. As for Cornwall why would anyone go there when they could go to South Wales, pay less for everything and have to share it with less people.

As mentioned above, not sure where you live, but North Norfolk has some amazing beaches, good country pubs and lots for kids, without ever getting too crowded, nice around Wells and Holkam, too far round to the west near Burnham Ovary and everyone has red trousers and a Surrey accent.
