planned for 40 litres of Yorkshire Lad bitter
10 kg of grain 😯 mash tun maxed out with just enough room for the sparge
I'll be brewing tomorrow. I need some session strength beer, so I'll be adapting a recipe I have for St Austell Proper Job, down to 1040-1042
This is an experiment to max out the brewing equipment with a hopefull end result of 20 litres for me and 20 for a mate should be about 5% if I hit the quantities right .
and tomorrow is also a brew day as my Bro is coming down from scotland to have a go with a view to him building his on set up .
Been trying to finish work early on a tuesday with a view of joining your rides around baildon got next tues off so should be a goer
90 minute mash at 67 c done and now starting the Sparge

I mostly do 60 minute mash, 60 minute boil, although I have a couple of repeat recipes that call for 90 minute boil. Having said that I do BIAB rather than 3 vessel...
I figure if 60 minutes is good enough for Black Sheep Brewery, it's good enough for me 😉
What do you use for sanitising? I've been using VWP but two of the last 4 batches have had a really nasty chemical taste to them, I'm hoping it's VWP caught in some micro scratches in the FVs that I'm about to replace...
next ride is 7pm Tuesday 20th at The Junction, bottom of Baildon Road, be good to meet up & chat about brewing, among other things
Bottling day for me 🙁 Got our 2yo to help which made it more tolerable.
I need to change my sanitation to something better - I also use that VWP chlorine bleach stuff. The rinsing is starting to do my head in - might try peroxide as that's got to cost next to nothing and won't have any solubility issues. Might still need rinsing mind.
I see bottle cleaning as a necessary evil but worth doing.
I don't like kegs as the whole batch is gone if anything goes wrong, but if you lose one bottle, what the hell, eh?
best bet is to clean them properly as you empty them. then pre-bottling cleaning is kept to a minimum.
I notice Fullers have changed their bottles to a new straight body, straight neck design. very nice. their old bottles had too fat a neck for my crown capper, but the new ones are just fine. I like their Black Cab Stout and London Porter in particular. Labels come off nice n easy too, just like Theakstons, Black Sheep, Adnams, Youngs and others. Don't like plastic labels, they don't come off. Wychwood bottles also no good for me
actually, that's a serious boil! looks very close to boiling over
yes theboil was interesting had a couple of near does and quite a bit splashed out so got some syrup
to cleanup
I got two fermenters with 19 litres each from it and had sparged some extra into a pan to boil on the cooker to top up with
the mian boil came out at 1062 but then i bust my hydrometer so could not get the real gravity after topping up
I wont do a lerge brew like that again unless igeta bigger vessel
I use starsan for sanitising but have to get distilled water as it goes cloudy with my tap water
great with it being no rinse makes bottling nearly a pleasure I do have a couple of cornies in the fridge for session beers which have been good this summer
Weather being favourable on tuesday I will pop over for the ride
