Kids are back at school full time from tomorrow. Both play brass and one plays the flute too. It seems that percussion tuition is going ahead as planned, but there has been no correspondence on brass / woodwind. Given the nature of these instruments, what do you reckon the chances of them being taught again soon are?
For a bonus point, thoughts on orchestras and brass band type practice with groups?
Obvs I’m going to contact the music service for the official answer, but are there any music teachers on here who could comment?

Daughter has been having Oboe and Sax lessons throughout lockdown via Zoom as she's preparing for Grade 8 and Jazz Grade 5 respectively. Looks as though advice from our music service (Gloucestershire) is woodwind lessons will continue remotely for the time being and will revert to face to face once stocks of bell socks have been purchased and suitable practice rooms identified. Not sure about Orchestra practice, she's champing at the bit to get back to County Wind Band and Jazz Orchestra. I think county practice will start up soon after return to school once they have planned suitable arrangements for players.

Update, having looked at the emails regarding county music I cannot see that restarting soon for any woodwind instruments, it appears strings/percussion may be able to meet with suitable distancing. A real shame as daughter really misses the group playing, it's where she meets most of her friends.

It’s a bugger! Eldest is starting higher music, his instruments are trumpet and drums. He may have to switch trumpet for piano which would be hard work but doable. Youngest is starting Nat 5 and hers are cornet and flute 🤦‍♂️. Not sure how the school group tuition can work. They also both really miss the orchestral and wind band groups. I guess it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things, but I still feel sorry for them.

According to High school, any brass or woodwind instrument lessons are not going ahead face-to-face and none in school time (at school). The music teacher also moves between schools so apart from the airborne transfer threat, the music teacher(s) are also considered a risk as they aren't situated in 1 school all the time.

Obviously that is relevant for my area, but seems to be the way just now...

I'm a peripatetic guitar teacher. In short....whom knows. As above, most of us teach in multiple schools so there's an added stumbling block there.

One of my schools have said not back until after Christmas at the earliest. One have said they'll try and get us back asap....let's be honest though, they're not going to make the decision to let us back in any time soon are they? Come November when 40% of the school has either Covid or another flu with Covid like symptoms then I'd imagine getting the guitar teacher back in to school will be a fairly low priority!

I am honestly dreading this upcoming period.

My son does flute and cornet. Lessons are carrying on virtually by vseen (?), but he is going to have some theory face to face at some point.

Thanks guys, I’d not considered the peripatetic nature of the music teacher role.
Reading that MU article, I can see a case for outdoor lessons 🤔

Both mine play flute. Eldest one is county/national level, his teacher is doing face to face lessons at home again, as she has a big kitchen/diner -he plays one side and she is on the other.

Daughter's teacher is still doing Zoom lessons as she doesn't have space to work face to face.

Local music centre is going back in September alternate weeks split into 2 groups, with kids and teachers socially distant. Next County Orchestra session is meant to be a residential in October half term - AIUI the DfE have a block on school residential trips and as it's organised by the county council they will stick to those guidelines, so unlikely to happen. We hope they might do a one or two day socially distanced rehearsal, but there won't be a public concert.
