Sitting on the train and pondering:

Largest wild UK mammal? Red deer? Or poss a wild horse breed?
Largest wild UK reptile? Adder?
Largest wild UK amphibian? Common toad?
Largest wild UK bird? Buick swan or Brent goose?
Largest wild UK freshwater fish? Pike or do we have a large native carp?

No googling yet. What have I got wrong, any other ideas or classes? Largest by mass for consistency.

Largest spider roper?

Mammal: Usually quoted as Red Deer, I don't think any of the wild horse breeds are as large.
Bird? Sea Eagle? Or are they a bit skinny? 🙂

Grass snakes grow bigger than adders, carp are not a native species so if you count them, the largest mammal will be an elephant somewhere.

One of the swans will be the heaviest bird I would have thought but a sea eagle is the physically biggest - just huge when you see them fly.

The whale I met was OK at addition, but multiplication was a no-no

Well, of course not. That's not the intended porpoise of a whale.

The Great Bustard is Britain's 'biggest bird', edging out the Mute Swan. Sea eagles have the largest wingspan.
FEMALE Grass Snakes are Britain's largest Reptiles, males much smaller but to be honest I've no idea as to whether they come up smaller than Adders of any sex...

Things could be on the change with regards birds etc. How are we doing for Storks and Cranes lately?

As for the horses, I don't think that they are native. Dartmoor/Beacons ponies are feral.

What about largest native carnivore?

Seriously, seals, dolphins, killer whales, sei whale etc.

If they're in British coastal waters that counts as native, right?

Do insects tip carnivores over into omnivores or does it need to be vegetative?

If they're born here aren't they automatically entitled to the equivalent of citizenship though? 😉

Ok so I meant predator. Wildcat > badger? In terms of mass, perhaps not. I dunno, never seen a wildcat.

EDIT: Wiki suggests wild cats go up to about the size of the biggest domestic cats. You know, the freakishly large ones that people sometimes have.

badger def more massive than a wildcat. pansy pussy.

Which reminds me, thinking of that thread that went "who first thought drinking cows milk..." etc... premise went something like at earlier stages of our evoultion we ate X so therefore to do so in later evolutionary stage didnt involve a "jump"...

But...

Which madman first fell face-first into a well lathered badger and said "You know, we should do this every morning..."? It sure as hell cant have been an evolutionary development....

Sturgeon for the fish, but it's unclear which species have been native, although at least one, definitely has.
You don't see many of them these days though.

Amazing fish. I did an internship at the Centre for Great Lakes Studies in Milwaukee when they were looking at sustainable caviar production in the Midwest - I'm not sure they'd fully thought through the demographics of their local market TBH.

People made brushes from all sorts of hair.. they just tried whatever was available and someone found that badger was the right length and texture..?

As someone with family near Milwaukee, I lolled at that 🙂

there's no large native Sturgeon in British waters are there..?

and as mentioned before.. although King Carp are the largest are they native..? I ould say yes.. there are thriving populations in our river systems.. and the largest in the lake environment are not recent imports.. nor do they display characteristics of imported European Carp..

Otherwise it's surely the Pike..
