While not being a big drinker, I hate to see waste. Rummaging around in the cupboard I found a couple of bottles of locally brewed ale from 2010. Does bottled ale have a shelf life?

Pour it, if it looks and smells ok, it probably is...

You can lay high strength ales down for years so I wouldn't worry

OPen in carefully over the sink , in case it gushes .
Pour 90% of contents into a glass, try not to glug it as it might be sedimented.
Smell it deeply, any vinigar smells the bin it off.
Check for clarity , should be clear . Taste it... tastes ok then it certainly wont kill you as pathogens cannot live in beer ( ABV and Ph takes care of them ) might just speed up your visit to the bathroom tomorrow morning

STM has it nailed there. Also, as badger opines, strong beer can effectively be 'cellared' just like wine.

Drink enough, and the following day you might wish for a quick and painless death... ๐Ÿ˜†

Slightly related: On holiday in Crete once, I tried the nearest Tavernas "local ale". One pint of. Immediate sweats and near drunk-blindness.

Definately off. The most curious thing was the scent of the vapour fumigating off me the following day...

The only thing I can compare that stench to is to the aroma of amphetamine misuse. Horrid.

Not Brandon but a couple of bottles from the Ely New years day 10k from Bartrams Brewery called Starters Orders ๐Ÿ™‚

The head was awesome! about three inches out the glass once it was poured, it was almost Guinness dark but it didn't look cloudy. Smelt fine, tasted ..... well, like beer! Ended up adding lemonade (I know, I know!).
