I'm putting together a surround sound set up and have some ten year old Bose Acoustimass speakers I'd like to use. For anyone who knows the system, the main base unit is broken but the small surround speakers are fine. Can I use this with my Yamaha RV Amp in conjunction with a seperately bought bass unit? I know a lot of people will criticise the Bose stuff but it's ample for what I need and I'd rather recycle.

My dad has been using accoustamass speakers with a normal system for years. In fact I think his first surround sound system consisted of a Yamaha Amp, Kef centre and sub and 4 x accoustamass for the surround. Worked great. I too don't understand the scorn poured Bose stuff. My dads accoustamass have been really good, he's also got a Bose 2.1 system in another room which has been really good for over 10 years and my Bose noise cancelling headphones are faultless. I guess they're expensive for what they are and they have some odd idiosyncrasies (not a fan of the spring loaded cable clamps), but work fine and last an age. In fact I was thinking a pair of accoustamass cubes would be perfect for the back of my camper van.

I'm not sure how good it would sound without a Bose subwoofer. I believe the Bose subwoofer also adds a lot of the mid tones, unlike a conventional subwoofer which just adds bass. The crossover on a conventional sub may not go high enough to complement the Bose cube speakers meaning you have a big gap in the midrange.

Take your cubes along to a hifi shop to demo them with a conventional sub. See what they sound like.

Yes, the speakers are so small as they only do the high tones, the sub does a lot of the mid-range too. Try before you buy!
