…and it all appears to be happening quite quickly…
Apparently the BBC should be re-making all the Carry on Films,
We've already got BBC Parliament. Should we be expecting BBC Parliament+1?
I love how easy it is to say "you need to do some britishness"- whether it's immigrants or the BBC or whatever, easy thing to say. But oh, you want to know what that means? Sorry, can't help you. It's not like you can even define englishness, or scottishness, or yorkshireness, or isleofdogsness, never mind all those things together. Just a damn foolish thing to say. But still it can be damn foolish and also damn scary at the same time

We've got Nectar Points, they're quite handy.
Oh for ****s sake. Reintroduction of imperial measurements. Great, no one under 50 understands them at all, but all the gammons will be wetting themselves with joy. What’s next? Cubits?
pathetic flag shagging
Great, no one under 50 understands them at all, but all the gammons will be wetting themselves with joy.
As long as they never apply it to mountain bike wheel sizes, we should be fine.
We have never abolished imperial measurements. Milk has always been sold in pints, as has beer, we have just had to also note the metric equivalent.
More bullshit for the hard of thinking to revel in. I really despair for this country and the people lapping up the shit fed to them by the idiots running the country.
Next week they’ll be reintroducing threpenny bits and shillings
Christ almighty, this country is just an embarrassment
Was it this thread we were talking about bribery?
LSD; no, not that.
Pounds, shillings and pence.
Guineas, half crowns, florin, shillings, tanners, thruppeny bits, ha'pennies.
Got a load of them from my dad's moneybox when he died; knew they would come in useful sometime...
Cubits were Egyptian - we'll 'ave none of that foreign muck over 'ere.
Bushels, pecks, rods, quarts, gills here we come.
John Bull printing sets will be compulsory for all under 18s.
Welcome to the 19th century.
My local mp, honest bob jenrick, is making a very rare public appearance in his constituency on Saturday; I'm tempted to be there and heckle.
some of the stuff they seem to be talking about they have no power to enact in Scotland NI and Wales. thats gonna be fun.
We have never abolished imperial measurements. Milk has always been sold in pints, as has beer, we have just had to also note the metric equivalent.
Our road signs are still in miles and yards
Our shoe sizes is measure in Barley-Corns
But does this mean we'll have to stop measuring bullshit by the Metric **** Ton?
They are not idiots.
They are very smart, yes even Truss and Dorries. Even Raab.
Not smart at doing what they are paid for but like virus, smart at thriving and multiplying.
They are as you say running the country. I dont know what the solution is but saying they are idiots is not it.
johnson has missed a trick - 'bring back the grain' could be his new slogan; foundation of all imperial weights.
The unit was based on the weight of a single grain of barley, considered equivalent to 1+1⁄3 grains of wheat.
Winston - they're not stupid academically but nothing they're doing is in the long term best interest of the UK so how should we describe them?
Dont think engineering will be moving back to Whitworth... however i do still use the term "needs a couple of thou of it" alongside "a midges dick" (about half a thou)....
I really despair for this country and the people lapping up the shit fed to them by the idiots running the country.
Boris Johnson broke Britain. There are some who think he’s just bruised it, and we’ll change course and begin fixing the damage. They are so wrong. We are only at the beginning of this.
@kelvin - I was going to say the same.
This nationalist populism is all about tomorrow’s daily Mail headlines - as befits a government run by a third rate journalist - but the long term damage of all this will be absolutely enormous
With every mind-blowingly stupid announcement like today’s imperial measures bollocks, this country is diminished
These clowns don’t give a toss because they’ll be long gone to their lucrative consultancies and columns in the telegraph when the true extent of the damage they’ve done really hits home.
You’re right that this is only the beginning
The only future for this country is to hope it can row back to where we were pre-Brexit. But that will probably take decades
I think the reintroduction of imperial measures is the least terrifying on the list, a move to allow software and artificial intelligence to be used as a medical device, and to reconsider regulations to allow the spraying of plant protection chemicals from drones strikes me as considerably more dangerous.
Looks like we’ll soon be introduced to the joys of GM food, hormone injected beef, chlorine chicken and all the other things they consider the EU has been restricting them from doing
Taking back control, eh?
The government yesterday made it so that all elections in England are FPTP. Just so we’re all clear where this is going. Where they can’t win locally without FPTP (city mayors for example) they simply quietly fix the voting system for themselves. Voter ID and changes to constituency boundaries to follow, to further embed their seat:vote ratio advantage over the other parties at UK elections.
The UK over the last couple of years has now ticked pretty much every box in what’s required to be a Banana Republic
Aah, Whitworth - now you're talking; adjustments must always be made in increments of a gnat's hair.
New slogan of the counter revolutionaries: "S.I. or die!"
Looks like we’ll soon be introduced to the joys of GM food, hormone injected beef, chlorine chicken
No chance, the shelves will remain empty...
State controlled TV… we can look forward to new episodes of Border (Repatriation) Force, Jamie Olivers “cooking on a ration book” Hunted (immigrants) and that perennial favourite The Glorious Leaders weekly speech….
Odd that you mention that, something similar has been tried before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Tasty_and_Healthy_Food
There is a clear ocean of water between bumbling, flip-flopping Johnson and Stalin though. At least Johnson has not starved 5 million with his agricultural polices (yet)...
I actually quite like the cabinet reshuffle and boundary changes, support for independence had fallen a wee bit. Only problem is we will be invaded by England as they start a small diversionary war to take people's minds off the great turnip shortage of 2035.
Moving to imperial measures would help ease labelling disputes in event of the fabled US trade agreement.
Naaaah. Remember they use the wrong sort of gallons and use fluid ounces instead of pints.
Sadly, I think this imperial measurement bollox will solidify their support among people in my mother's generation. I swear that she has got worse about things like this as she has got older, wanting a return to the 60's she remembers through the long lens of history.
Moving to imperial measures would help ease labelling disputes in event of the fabled US trade agreement.
Because the US' biggest partners in NAFTA Canada and Mexico both use metric, US manufacturers are increasingly moving to metric units (or at least metric labelling) on their products, and of course US "imperial" are all different anyway!
It's just a dead cat, all the weights and measures systems in the country are all metric, there's no way to ensure imperial measures are accurate anymore. Plus of course it's nothing to do with the EU, it's an agreement to use SI that started in the 19thC.
imperial measurements nonsense is just proof that, in absence of policies, they want to talk about, the next 2.5 years will be filled with culture war guff like this all the way until the election
Check out Sir Roger Gale MP getting his cards marked by Patel and Johnson (at about 0.35 secs in) when he has the temerity to suggest that a lack of transport and immigrant pickers is causing his constituents financial difficulties

At least Johnson has not starved 5 million with his agricultural polices (yet)…
Give him time and at least Churchill had competent types at the ministry of food to run rationing.
At least Johnson has not starved 5 million with his agricultural polices (yet)…
no - just a mere 100 000 or so as a direct result of his incompetence over covid
Levelling up will just mean a race to the bottom.
They are very smart, yes even Truss and Dorries. Even Raab.
Not smart at doing what they are paid for but like virus, smart at thriving and multiplying.
Yep I used to call it crafty dafty, people not that smart(in the educational sense)but very very good at getting on as they were quick to adapt to situations to take advantage. A survival instinct.
(Sneaky edit but Truss an Raab are well educated. Whatever that signifys)
But still it can be damn foolish and also damn scary at the same time
The scary is where it can lead, what is 2lbs of Britishness just quantifying it is bad.
Will it be mandated in the future that you have to exhibit Britishness, mandatory Morris dancing in the schools or Fred Perry ,doc martins and a nice tidy short back and sides or bowler hats and umbrellas.
TBH I think you need a bit of National service back to get some manners in the kids.:-)
Of course this is yet another boost to the SNP because the tories equate britishness with englishness.
its is pretty hard to differentiate the two things but impossible for these dimwits in the tory party

Every time I see stuff like this i think its hysterical over reaction, and then the government does something at least as daft.

Can I just say all that is english not british?
doc martins
The tv doc or the Dr Martens boots, named after their inventor, Germany army doc Klaus Märtens?

Tbh I needed to put a smiley on it, for irony 🙂
Ah but you inhabit a world where freedom of movement was swapped for blue passports and the ability to sell apples in lbs and no one can tell you what eu rule prevented them from doing something , where armoured jet skis are going to intercept migrants, tunnels to Ireland and other countries are proposed by your PM.
Who knows what weird shit your gonna do next 🙂
My supplier Utility Point went tits up, just received an email informing me my new supplier is Electricite de France. Tres jolie!
Interesting. I haven't been told yet.
Has anyone else who has read Speak for England stopped being surprised by parody turning to prophecy?
Wonder what [s]Headmaster's[/s] BoJo's next great policy announcement will be? A renewed Comet Mk3 to compete with those horrid communists at Airbus?
Of course this is yet another boost to the SNP because the tories equate britishness with englishness.
its is pretty hard to differentiate the two things
I'd say it's very easy to differentiate and easier when outside England, 'English' is the nationality, 'British' is an ideology.
I'd say there is more confusion in England in that English people, not having their own parliament or individua political presence, have identified with 'British' over 'English' for so long they have in the main lost their original national identity for 'Britishness'.
His latest lie
Claimed Rutte the dutch PM was going to mediate for him in his absurd quest to renegotiate the brexit agreement. Immediately slapped down by the dutch who actually told him that Johnson needed to behave pragmatically.

No you absolutely cannot, you treasonous unbritish enemy of the state.
and the ability to sell apples in lbs
Sell them you say... there are 0lbs of apples on the supermarket shelves which is pretty much the same as there being 0kg.
🙂

Can I be deported please?

TBH I suppose other than pointing people to watch Dam busters, Zulu and the Italian job I really wouldn’t have a Donald Duck over what Britishness was other than it’s on the same shelf as sovereignty.
(Only time I’ve really heard Britishness banged on about was when people were doing the racialist thing.)
I feel it’s currently a label for some nostalgic past that never truly existed ,which I’ve heard described as toxic nostalgia and I think that’s an apt description.
Can I be deported please?
Depends……
Have to see if there’s a clause in that Australia deal that lets them resume transportation 🙂

Yep it’s an odd situation getting exactly what you asked for then just continually blaming everyone else for it’s failings.
(That you were warned against originally)
And then claiming Rutte is going to do something he ( Rutte) totally denies saying
Never mind all that nonsense. Never mind the empty shelves and looming energy crisis, Boris will be at the White House today.
Lots of photo ops with lots of flags and “aaaaaarm….. wiffle-waffle…. Global Britain… wiffle-waffle… Special Relationship….”
It was (Dutch) oven-ready.
Can I be deported please?
I'm sure the Scots would be happy to send another Englishman back south!

I think its linked to a traditionally blinkered/biased teaching of British history, although I suspect plenty of other nations do the same.

Sorry I can only speak with the experience of one school (in England) but despite the curriculum constraints they work within, I’ve been impressed how balanced a view the teachers have been able teach. I suspect the problems come from the media who give the less nuanced view and parents who don’t think understanding another point of view on history (or anything else) matters.
If I remember my GCSE history (a stretch, it was a while ago) I learned very little about British History. The syllabus was:
Communism in Russia from 1917 to 1941
Boom, Depression and New Deal (USA post-WW1, pre-WW2)
Segregation & Integration (USA 1950s & 60s)
US and French involvement in Vietnam from the 50s to the fall of Saigon
I cannot remember being taught anything of substance about modern British history.

We've granted TJ citizenship
History I was taught at school was pretty poor. I only took it until 14 and it was a long time ago but a bit on prehistoric stuff ( if that is not an oxymoron) Various scots kings and queens in the medieval period and that was it. NO english medival history at all, no european history.
i would hope tho 45 years later it was a bit better
He's admitted to having 6 kids.
The wheels are really coming off, Laura Kuennsberg was mildly critical again
Love the headlines this morning about Biden essentially telling him he's not a priority with regards to a Trade Deal. Just another thing to add to the long list of things that have gone from wishful thinking to reality.
He’s admitted to having 6 kids.
Doesn't rule out there being more.
I did A-level 'British economic history', fascinating with a good bit of Hobsbawm-type Marxism, but that syllabus no longer exists.
He’s admitted to having 6 kids.
Apparently the question was "do you have six children?" To which he answered "yes".
The follow up question should have been "do you have seven children?" To which the answer is probably also "yes"
I’m sure the Scots would be happy to send another Englishman back south!
Away with yer shite. I’ve had enough time, friends and help from Scots to know comments like this belong to trolls and bullshit merchants.

This was the headline yesterday as well. I suspect “we’ve” known/expected for a while now and even have a rough idea of when to really expect progress.
But admitting how far out it really is might be viewed as damaging. So we’ll just get bluster and bllx.
he's just announced they're subsidising the production of CO2 today, but don't worry it's definately a one-off and nothing at all to do with anything.
sunlit arselands.

Arselit sunlands.
Fart For England
Sorry I can only speak with the experience of one school (in England) but despite the curriculum constraints they work within
It's definiyely changed now, but the history I was taught - in the "O" level era, when dinosaurs were Current Affairs - and especially wider historical information you could read away from the curriculum, was still very much Empire focused, and it's this older generation who have those Union Flag blinkers on.
He did seem to be getting a grilling from Laura on BBC News last night. My lad reckons it was the toughest grilling he's had from anyone since the pandemic began, including Starmer, which doesn't say much.
Maybe her "source in No10" has asked her to twist the knife for him
he’s just announced they’re subsidising the production of CO2 today, but don’t worry it’s definately a one-off and nothing at all to do with anything.
Two plants closed; one to re-open; gov subsidy limited to three weeks.
If wholesale gas price hasn't fallen in three weeks time, what next?
What a shambles so...nothing new.
Was it just me that hoped when he was being interviewed by Laura on BBc news last night, that someone would grab him by the ankles and toss him of the balcony.
We all knew his overseas trip would be completely humiliating but ,still, that doesn't make it any less skin crawling when it actually happens. 'Statesmen' Boris, as well as being a contradiction in terms, is the most ridiculous guise of the useless oaf.
It's just next level humiliation now, pathetic. I really hope the US vetoes any attempt to joint the Canada/Mexico bloc. WTF!!!! I can't believe this is happening.
Anyway, I thought the prick had 7 kids. 4 with his ex wife, 2 with present wife (way to burnish those green credentials Johnson) and 1 with Petronella Wyatt, that journalist tart. DNA proven. Anyhow, I've spent too much time already thinking about his pathetic personal life
If someone asks you if you have six kids and you have seven, saying yes is factually correct. He does not need to say anything else.
If he had been asked "How many children do you have?", he would have blustered and avoided an answer. This way he can say he answered it straight an honest, despite it not being what people wanted.
Edited to add that his "green credentials" will last as long as Carrie tells him to have them. but then, we know that, right?
It’s just next level humiliation now, pathetic. I really hope the US vetoes any attempt to joint the Canada/Mexico bloc. WTF!!!! I can’t believe this is happening.
Newsnight was an eye opener last night. Some Brexiteer Tory was banging on about a potential trade deal with the US. They then cut to a senator who was actually on the US trade committee who not so much threw a bucket of water over that idea, as drowned it in an olympic sized swimming pool. He pointed out that the committee had never actually even discussed a trade deal with the UK, nor did they have any plans to do so. It wasn't even on anyones radar in the US.
He then went on to point out that if the UK didn't sort its shit out re: Northern Ireland, then there wouldn't ever be any discussions about a trade deal
So it was the usual: Brexiteer fantasy versus actual reality
Talks of trade deals with US drive me nuts. They back slap about trade deals which do not exist whilst blustering about the importance of trade deals whilst blissfully ignoring the fact that they walked us away from the biggest and best trade deal in world history.
So it was the usual: Brexiteer fantasy versus actual reality
I think it may have been the the same senator who suggested that 30% of the US' trade was with Mexico and Canada, and that by comparisons, the UK at 2.5 % (the same as Taiwan) was not high on any-ones agenda.
Imagine prioritising trade with your nearest neighbours instead of countries on the other side of the planet?
Madness!
