I know the obvious answer is to get a quote (on a van I don't yet own), but generally speaking how much more is a van to insure than a car...specially one that's going to be slept in occasionally? You get asked if a car has been modified in any way which is generally a 'no' but a van will generally be a 'yes' which I'm guessing is reflected in the premiums...

Mine is less than the car 6month T6 vs 3year old passat.

It depends on modifications. If it's just ply for a bed and storage then it can be removed so should be OK on insurance if it's electrical, body work, or fitting gas etc then inform insurance.

My T5 with diy kombi conversion, carpeting, alloys, spoiler, etc is the cheapest vehicle I've ever insured. £180 fully comp with Aviva. I tried so called van specialists who either charged the earth or took forever to get back with a unimpressive quote. Aviva use a live chat so no waiting in a phone queue and they aren't fazed by additions.

I like those answers - thanks 😉
It will be ply lining, carpeting, maybe a roll & roll bed inside.
Not converting to be a full-on camper with cooker/water etc.
It might (hopefully) be a T5 but could end up being a Vivaro/Trafic which I guess would be cheaper to insure than a T5.

£380 fully comp to insure my t5 with Adrian flux (kombi conversion & a remap).
Must remember to call aviva at renewal time 🙂

My Vito was marginally less to insure than my audi a6. Churchill seemed totally ok with insuring a van as a family vehicle

As a slight thread hijack, who would anyone recommend for commercial van insurance?
Caddy type thing rather than T5?

as a bench mark my traffic/ experts usually cost 375 fully comp for business use thats with a zillion years no claims and 53 years old driver on the drive every night limited to <10k every year.. named driver only.. sadly the rochdale postcode does us no favours at all ( ol15 the most expensive place to insure a taxi in the uk)

I'm with Brentacre and they understand the desire to have a van for sporting or camping use which some companies can't get their head around.

I can do anything I want with mine without telling them as long as I don't increase the power. Obviously when I buy the turbo and remap that I want they'll still insure it but probably increase the price a bit.

T5 kombi conversion with remap and bits - about the same as a hot hatch. (Sub £500)

Brentacre told me there'd be no price increase if I got mine remapped - just an admin fee for updating the documents.

🙂 Excellent news! 460 torques here we come!

It's definitely getting done but I need quite a lot of other stuff at the same time.

I just went with the pick of the bunch of usual suspects, added work miles but no racking I think used to be the option along with not sign written.

Bed etc was nothing more than a frame really.
Insurance was about the same as a car

On-street parking at your place of residence seems to be the biggest price impact at the moment. When I got this years quote through, I picked up that they had listed me as private drive. I corrected the error and the policy went up by £200. (I live in a city and according to the insurance company thefts from all vehicles are higher in the area when on street parking)
