I know some folk on here are in a similar work situation to my self.

The .gov site is about as clear as mud as i dont fit any of their classifications or the "three rules"

I work for a company. MY company is based in an african country, im paid from out side the uk, I work here 180 days of the year and i live in the uk - so I pay uk tax on my earnings as im resident there. - thats a fair cop.

What i dont understand is my national insurance.

Working in any other country
Youโ€™ll carry on paying National Insurance for the first 52 weeks youโ€™re abroad if youโ€™re working for an employer outside the EEA, Switzerland and bilateral Social Security agreement countries, and you meet the following 3 conditions:

your employer has a place of business in the UK
youโ€™re ordinarily resident in the UK
you were living in the UK immediately before starting work abroad

So my employer doesnt have a place of business in the uk.

So do i then go onto voluntary contributions ? or am i classed as self employed in the tax mans eyes - those appear to be the only two options im given if i dont fit the above.

Im off to see the accountant when i get home but its my first year doing this and I'm trying to get a handle on what my bill is likely to be.

Obvious question? Does your pay slip show NI deductions?

I'd say you're on voluntary contributions then - your employer probably doesn't have any way of paying UK NI, and is under no obligation to do so as they aren't in the EEA.

Just to be really sad, I can point you to the HMRC manual - www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/paye-manual/paye20100

We were directed to this for a company based in S Korea - where are your employers based?

Based out/pay tax in Angola but wages come from panama.

aye was digging about it looks like i have to phone HMRC and arrange to pay class 2 NIC @ 14.85 a week it wont be done with my self assessment unlike if i was self employed.

Will speak to the accountant when i get home but it does look like its not 12% as i feared.

will see what the accountant says.
