MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Super boring topic - I've reached the end of my tether with iTunes. In what is a recognised problem (which is ignored by Apple), it keeps 'losing' purchases and is just generally a bit crap. I'm using my phone as a backup at the moment and have added Wondershare to update any songs that go awry. Have also followed all the redownload advice on the internet to no avail.
I don't use Spotify or any other streaming services, so only need something to manage purchased or uploaded music. Will need to manage the existing files on my computer, obviously.
Does anyone have experience of using Tomahawk, Vox, etc? Any recommendations on what I could use? All help gratefully received!

Spotify will manage stuff you own and have downloaded along with the rest. Google Music does the same, if you haven't tried them nothing to lose by having a go.
I'm averse to paying the Spotify subscription fee. Could try Google music but have read it isn't an upgrade on iTunes and tends to push you towards their own store. Will have a look though.
Any more?

I tried it, the app is rubbish. And if you like it, you have to start paying a monthly fee. Nah thanks.
What do you mean when you say "manage" the files?
I use iTunes, but use this on another laptop for transferring n stuff - https://www.copytrans.net/
Ah, sorry, not Mac s/w
I pay £20 a year for the iTunes match service. This syncs music across multiple devices (2 laptops, and a Mac mini) automagically.
Stuff doesn't go missing, but it does occasionally need downloading again.
By manage I really just want something that is easy to navigate, handles playlists, removes duplicates, corrects artwork and info. For instance I really like Bonnie Prince Billy. His metadata is crap so his tunes download with loads of different varieties of his name. I manually correct them, but whenever I update iTunes they f-ing revert to the original listing. Which is arse-numbingly tedious.
Mostly I want one that doesn't lose sodding random track though!
There was something on The Register yesterday I think about Apple and films. Apparently you just license it, so even if you have bought media from them ("bought"), if the rights owner removes the rights, you lose the ability to access it. Ah, here it is:

It may also apply to music.
I use Plex. The server runs on my NAS and indexes all my ripped music and TV too. Apps for various devices and a choice of two for your Mac. Plexamp for Mac is awesomely lofi. 🙂

I tag my stuff before loading into iTunes, iTunes never messes with it. Got almost a TB of music managed by iTunes with no issues whatsoever. Have you got "let iTunes organise my music" switched on or something?
Will check out Plex, thank you!
Nup, it's not set to organise my music. It's not the rights thing either, as the files can be redownloaded.

Oh god, yeah. I must have about half a dozen variants.
i recommend you don’t take a liking to Arvo Part, must have about a dozen for him....
Arvo Part you say...
