Slight trip has left me swigging Oramorph while I wait for the swelling and pain of four broken ribs to subside. Broke a finger on the left hand and degloved the tip so that is all wrapped up and in a cast.

Any sudden movements or jarring is not a pleasant experience so no coke and crack whores.

What else is there to entertain myself that is better than watching Peppa Pig on YouTube?

a world-class exercise in nominative determinism. What do you mean, that’s not your real name?

Some names are chosen, some are given. Mine is earned.

I was carrying this across the garden to place it on the chosen display spot on the corner of the patio steps when I was hit by a meteor/ tripped on a flowerpot and fell onto the steps using my torso to break my fall and give the boulder a soft landing.

You will be pleased to know that the boulder is fine but as well as the ribs, I caught my little finger on the edge of the step which snapped the finger and ripped the flesh off the end. The have taped the end back on but I think you can still make out the join.

I see another Dr tomorrow to see what he wants to do with it but am now sat swigging Oramorph and bored. Suggestions to pass the time that don't involve moving, standing, sitting, breathing etc are welcome.

It hurts to pick up a book before that gets suggested.

Are you bored enough to watch me type unhelpful messages online? You can catch up on Only Connect and see if you can work out which one of the winning team is on here.

Destroy/burn down your workshop and all ladders.
Take up full time painting.
Make your garden a squirrel sanctuary and spend the time between paintings, caring for baby squirrels.
Drain the hot tub and fill it with the stuff that they used in Wanted.
Tub wax

AND STOP POSTING THOSE PHOTOS 🙂

I can just imagine the sound of a fall, a shout of pain, and Mrs. WCA rolling her eyes, then calmly gathering up the first aid kit she always has to hand and heading out into the garden wondering what the silly bugger has done this time.

I thought I was accident prone, but you are another level. I'm surprised you aren't half in/half out of consciousness - that's how I spent 3 weeks after breaking my spine and 4 ribs.

GWS !

Very impressive accident rate. I imagine you would get a very good annuity rate, when the time comes, they'll take one look at your medical history and go 'I'll give him 5 years or less..'.

Ribs are stoopidly painful when you damage them aren't they? I managed to crack one of mine on the 10th Dec, I still can't lie on my front in bed etc. A meteorite strike is a much better story than mine though. Pillow tip above is massively important, never be without one otherwise coughing will be impossible. And you will need to cough. And of course when you're healed you'll be able to use it to break your fall 🙂

Suggestions? Get onto the Netflix recommends thread and enjoy. I don't give a F* About Kevin, Succession, Wayne, etc won't necessarily make you laugh (cos you don't want to be doing that) but will entertain you if you ain't seen 'em.

Its probably easier once you know the ambulance and A&E staff by name and have access to the frequent flier lounge

"Degloved" is a word that makes me 🤢🤮. It's a term used to convince newbie rock climbers to remove any rings before climbing. It was very effective.

Stay in bed and limit activities to your right hand.

I don't want to see any photos of any injuries that result from said activities!

Can I suggest before your ribs start knitting back together that you hang a piece of rope from the ceiling above your bed so you can pull yourself out of bed in the morning.

No I’m not joking it’s that painful.

Oramorph+Whiskey

This is actually legitimate - Taken directly from the NHS guidelines on taking morphine

" Q: Can I drink alcohol?

A: A small glass of wine, beer, sherry or whisky may help you feel better and improve your appetite. It is best to avoid taking more than this as you may become too drowsy. "

Ribs tend to be very painful for a week and then progressively get better.

What, walking across a patio ?? 😆

Whats needed is a good chisel slipped injury pic. This is why you dont place a hand in front of the blade in the direction you're pushing it 😆

A good effort, not quite the ultimate de-glove, that accolade goes to Adam Kay describing the student who de-gloved his penis on anti-climb paint on a lamp post. There are no pics fortunately.

And do you know the worst bit?

Despite trying to catch the concrete boulder on my chest to protect it, it still broke 🙁

The photo does show almost exactly how I fell though as I was underneath the boulder with half my body on one step, the other half on the other step and the flex in my ribs failing to allow that to happen without snapping. The little broken bits on the step even represent my finger.

No intention of hijacking the thread but I broke some ribs when I got hit by a car whilst commuting on my bike on the 22nd December. Whilst I can now move and do stuff my ribs are still swollen and I still get pain after doing anything. Been off work for five weeks and thinking of going back but hesitant due to the swelling and pain after doing stuff. When should I expect the swelling and aching/pain to go?

I normally allow 6-8 weeks for ribs as you can get a lot of internal swelling that is compressed in your torso and it is really hard not to move the broken ribs, especially if you breathe.

I assume you were properly checked at the time so there is no internal or other injury that was named by the ribs. Could be worth checking.

My entire torso is Salem at the moment so the skin it tight like a drum. That should reduce in the next couple of days which will reduce the acuteness of the pain but there is no good news with ribs. They take fricking agreed to get properly better in my experience

The earlier suggestion about a row above the bed was a good one. I had forgotten how much it hurts to get in and out of bed until I just went for a pee. Also discovered I can squeeze when peeing as it hurts to much so just stand there waiting for the dribble to end. Just thought I would share that mental image of me naked and dribbling

You plonker!

Use your remaining hand to order a stair climbing sack barrow or an from Amazon so you can deal with the heavy stuff better, in several weeks time, at least.

BBC iplayer, Inspector Montalbano, glorious long form gentle detective stuff with food, wine and posh Italian totty to keep you busy for a while, and better than the books to me as not having been to Sicily, I can't visualise the scenery or climate being a northern brit.

Get sensible well soon.

There is nothing. Peppa is the pinnacle of culture. Enjoy. Ask someone to get you a book about concrete and plan your next boulder.

Actually I feel we have some commonality... I fell off my trials bike this weekend trying to hop off a low wall. Tyre slipped and I banged my right ribs against said wall. Broke nothing and carried on riding as didn't seem an issue but have been aching ever since.

And here's a picture of a boulder I was making last year. Think you posted some advice in the thread I asked about how to mix concrete for fake boulders!

Finished!

Use a Beanbag as a pillow so you don't scream yourself awake, when you roll over onto the damaged side in your sleep.

Broken ribs? Try not to pick up that nasty bug thing that’s going round that has “persistent cough” as a symptom. That’s not going to be pleasant.

You should use the time to plan your next project,a 1:1 scale of the eiffel tower made from razor wire or convert the hot tub to an acid tank filled with acid-resistant sharks, perhaps?

Or something less dangerous, like a kinetic sculpture involving bacon slicers, chainsaws and high power lasers.

Anyway, here's hoping you heal fast and well. One thing not to watch would be the complete Red Dwarf.

Oh yes. You can just stand there and dribble when you need a pee but taking a dump can be agony without some Movicol first.

If getting out of bed is too painful, might I suggest a Nalgene wide mouth water bottle for emergencies? A lot of people here use them when camping so that they don't have to actually leave a tent in negative 10C.

Just please mark it up as "Not suitable for drinking" or something.

“Not suitable for drinking”

Mine were labelled 'intake' and 'exhaust', with extra scull-and-crossbones for good measure. Pleasantly warm in sleeping bag when full.

Hand operation scheduled for this Friday.

Ribs still hurting. Sitting seems to have moved the pain mostly to the top two ribs whereas it was originally the lower ones which are now showing nice bruises. Adjustable standing desk makes the ribs much better but hurts the ankle after about an hour. Oramorph is still a good friend.

Ribs suck - always more painful than they should be and always take ages to heal and even longer when there are multiple ribs and multiple breaks in them.

No point even skiving off work as I am working from home and I still can't do anything useful when not working.

Ribs do suck.

I find it bad when they're almost there and lull you into a false sense.

You move or do something and they start hurting again....

I hand a working right hand and 12" wood so...

Yes, it needs finishing but it is so damned time consuming positioning, clamping, carving, positioning, clamping, carving, positioning, clamping, carving with only one good had.
