The Penal Colony by Richard Herley
Cracking good read and also available in the Kindle store for no pounds and zero pence 😀
Ta. One clicked it to my kindle.
Not sure it's my thang, but 'bought' anyway. Ta for the PSA.
If anyone is interested or cares, in a much lighter vein, I'm really enjoying Ned Boultings "How I won the Yellow Jumper". You forget the weird things that have happened in the last 10 years of the Tour, and his view of it is very interesting, and often quite funny
thanks for the suggestion.
As another free kindle recommendation I've recently finished The Phoenix Conspiracy by Richard L Sanders which while not the best scifi book I've read was good enough that it was worth reading.
Citizen of the Galaxy by Robert Heinlen
The song of Phaid the gambler by Mick Farren
Both cracking sci-fi books
That's on my list Cheesey. Will get there eventually.
Finished The Hanging Shed last week: fast-paced post WW II thriller that takes a swipe at various 'groups' but remains eminently readable.
Currently reading Court of the Air: steampunkery galore.
Thanks to the OP. I read the Penal Colony and it was a good read. Slightly weak at the very end but excellent up to that.
I also recently downloaded Samuri from here's Kindle book "Three Bent Links" which was well worth the 79p it cost. The first story in particular was excellent.
If you ever do the paperback samuri, there's your front cover puff right there... 'well worth 79p'

I wasn't intending to damn with faint praise it's more that I usually get books from the library so paying is a bit alien to me...

I've bought hundreds of books over the years and TBH only read (or start reading) about 20% of them. Just don't have the time - nor the money to 'waste'. Hence 2 years ago I too started using the local library and oddly I reckon I read more than before. Saved a good few quid too. Plus downloading samples to iP4 Kindle app is a help.
Just finished the book recommended by the OP and thoroughly enjoyed it - feel a bit guilty that it was foc as I would gladly have paid to read it. recommended
The men who stare at goats
Very funny
