I've been making a real effort to get my weight down this year. So far, I've managed to get down from 79 to 71.4kg since January, which is great. I was planning to stop at 71.5kg, but having ran some figures through a body fat calculator, my fat percentage is still 16.5%...higher than the ideal 15%. My wife already thinks I look "too thin" but should I keep going or stop?!

35yrs, 181.5cm, 71.4kg.

Doesn't matter - it'll all go to shit during Christmas anyhow.

I would assume it depends on what exercises you have been doing...if youve just been hammering the cardio and building no muscle mass then that might be why your body fat percentage hasn't dropped in line with the weight loss.*

*non-qualified guesswork going on 🙂

It's lack of muscle that's the problem. You'll look like a sack of elbows when you get down to 10% AKA a cyclist.

Mine is 110%. Either that or my arithmetic isn't the best.

Well Froome is near as damn it the same height and weight as you but I guess his body fat is somewhere around the 5% mark - I think Wiggins was down to 4% in 2012. Maybe you're losing the 'wrong' type of weight. When losing weight apparently your body can either loose fat or muscle - the trick is to find an exercise regime and diet that encourages your body to ditch the fat and not the muscle - important if you're looking to improve your power to weight and power per KG numbers.

So maybe its not a case of losing more weight, but putting on more muscle and losing the fat.

Got to remember though that these guys are only really at level for maybe three or four weeks a year! And it takes some serious diet control and nutritional expertise to get there and maintain strength.

My body fat % is around the same as a Pork Pie, BUT... I've lost 10% body weight in 6 months.

I can't add anything to this thread, I just wanted to have a quick smug post. 🙂

That's quite a transformation, but I prefer the before look.

I think diet is probably a big factor. I lost a ton of weight (not literally) by cutting out a lot of crap, but my main diet was still pizza and chips and all the rest of it. It's easy to reach a point where you're loosing muscle, but still carrying a bit of fat, which is where I was at.

I'm no dietitian, but I reckon good foods is the way to go. It's easy to burn the calories you consume if you cycle a lot, but if you replace them with crap, that's what you'll end up with. It's incredible when you look at what guys like Chris Froome eat, considering they can eat 3 times the amount of your average person. They're really rigorous with their diets.

Also though, I think once you hit your late 30s, I'm not sure you ever going to be as lean as you were at 21...
