Why? MrsGrahamS and I use the same set of contacts on two iphones and an iPad, all synced via iCloud. No issue.

No need for desktop at all. Just set up the Google account on the iPhone and have that sync contacts.

WTH can't Apple build something into the OS like that in the first place. God I hate Apple stuff (which is odd 'cos I was a bit of a fan!).
because it's not needed - as GrahamS said the sync works fine normally, it's obviously something up with your wife's phone. Er well it doesn't on my wife's phone. Flatly refused to sync any icloud contacts up, and yes everything was set up right.
Plenty of threads about it on the internet.
All the Gmail contacts sync'd fine.

All contacts should sync with iCloud - try deleting and re-adding the account
Apple aren't going to go out of their way / soend deveioment dollars to make it easy for you to transfer all your stuff off and to a competitors eco-system
