I told I guy I work with that I liked his handbag and his perfume smelt nice (dead strong and he was splashing it on like Henry Cooper).

It's the only way to describe the bag and the perfume he was wearing was some kind of Calvin Something or the other (he told me but I cant remember)

Anyway I pretty much stuck to my guns and he got really quite upset.

So anyway, when did it become OK for men to wear perfume and carry handbags or do I owe this chap an apology.

Joolsburger, you may be facing a claim for sexual discrimination, you humiliated this chap because he showed gay side, sadly we are seeing more nd more feminisation of the male, and of the male being seen as a sex symbol to sell product.

Best to offer profuse apologies, and get a DVD copy of Queer as folk.

Joolsburger, you may be by your attitude and words saying that he is less of a man than yourself, because instead of using a satchel, breifcase, and wearing high scent aftershave to cover up a personal odour problem,it could well be seen as a case of discrimination.

Gald to see you have the token Gay man working with you.

Wow can of worms eh..

This is a leather handbag afaic and the perfume well it was flowery, problem was a joke turned into a row and he did get really stressed.

No "token" gays in my office just a gay man who is a good mate.

Too much perfume is a bit distasteful, as is cheap aftershave or dousing yourself in lynx. I believe a fella should have a good scent, decent shoes and be dressed right. It's generally a point of banter and mick taking both ways at work. Sounds like your work mate is a bit over sensitive, it's all horses for courses, you should dress for yourself.

Well no handbag this morning.

Personally I'm all for peoples freedom to do what they want and my freedom to take the piss. I am obviously old fashioned but unapologetic, the guy had a handbag FFS.

Not really sure that you can make that judgement from a single persons offense.

Perfume? Is male perfume available, or is it just aftershave that's existed for real men for the past century?

Bags - depends on the bag, a bit odd:

Borderline:

Acceptable:

😆

I personally have loads of stuff to carry to and from work, and at weekends when biking or walking - so I take a rucksack. Any other time I have a phone and a wallet, what else could a bloke want to carry?

I find all strong perfumes male (afteshave) and female unpleasant and foul. a faint wiff of perfume is acceptable but a strong reek is not

I'm very sure you can, even more so if it's the person who the joke was directed at who is offended. Why should you go to work and be mocked, there is ways to sort and if the guy mentions he finds it offensive or asks what the problem is then Jools should explain himself and stop ridiculing.

Anyway I pretty much stuck to my guns

I'm interested to know what 'pretty much stuck to my guns' means exactly?

Does it in fact mean that following on from a bit of light-hearted piss-taking you then tried to tell him that it was genuinely not ok for men to carry bags and wear aftershave

I am not some kind of ogre/bully let me make that clear.

There is a fair bit of banter in my office which is pretty normal as we are all in sales that's what this was.

The gay guy here would be very amused to hear himself described as too scared to disagree as he is 6 4 and 22 stone, not all gay men are like your obvious view of them and I think he'd find that more offensive.

I have no issue with a persons sexuality but rightly or wrongly I view handbags and perfume as effeminate traits. I think what really cheesed this guy off is a few of the guys agreed and now his 300 pound manbag is called into question.

Bags that men can carry include rucsacs, holdalls, satchels, breifcases, computer bags and at a push shopping bags.

Not 300 pound mulberry handbags FFS!

So you did tell him that it actually wasn't ok for him to carry a bag? Again, as far as I'm concerned:

Piss-taking in the spirit of friendly banter = probably fine
Trying to explain why it actually isn't acceptable for a man to carry a certain type of bag = ridiculous

Well, simply put blokes shouldnt carry handbags.

A bloke having a high degree of empathy is fine however.

Both effeminate traits.

Seriously how much difference is there between a briefcase, a courier bag, a ruck sack and a man bag for carrying your bits and bobs around. It's just a matter of taste, no?

Effeminate has nothing to do with sexuality and you show your bigotry by thinking it does.

But really, can you explain why it is that certain types/shapes/styles of bag are 'OK' for men to carry while others are not?

Or when you think about it, is it all really rather silly?

if it had a shoulder strap its not a handbag

maybe the aftershave is to mask the stenching BO he detects from everyone else in the office?

I can't quite believe what I am reading from joolsburger.

It doesn't matter if he is gay, straight, black, fat, ginger or whatever. You said something that offended him and your inability to appreciate that fact is worrying. You continue to think that what you said was acceptable but it was offensive to the person and you should apologise.

I have a number of A4 folders and a laptop. These items conveniently fit into a messenger bag. I wear a messenger bag.

Should i need a new messenger bag I will be buying a wax/leather one because the look better and last longer.

Does following these seemingly logical steps mean that 'sales' people will indirectly (for the sake of being PC) question my sexuality?

Will a similar thing happen if i have the audacity to smell pleasant?

Banter is banter, someone needs a lesson in recongnising the line between having a laugh at/with someone and bullying them based on their own prejudices/ignorance.

Why does the sexuality thing keep cropping up when no one said anything about his sexuality. Seems to me that people want to put words into my mouth to make their argument more PC based.

I simply and still do wonder when it became cool for men to use perfume and wear handbags.. What??

Men have been using some kind of deodorant/scent/aftershave for many many years. Men have also been carrying briefcases/rucksacks/bags for many years. Can't you see how ridiculous you sound trying to dictate which exact type of smelly stuff/bag is ok and which is unacceptable for people of a certain gender?

Again - light-hearted piss-taking is one thing. The fact that you seem to have a genuine problem with it says a lot about you.

Is a black leather A4 sized bag with a flap over top & a strap acceptable? Bit like a messenger bag, I guess. I am a little concerned as to whether I should be using it or not. It's got at least one chunky zip on it, if that makes a difference?

And how about Gillette deodorant, with the occasional squirt of aftershave?

I don't have a handbag becuase I like to keep my hands free for the raping and the pillaging and the wrestling of sabre toothed tigers etc.

Just make sure you 'refuel' your face with plenty of beer after a hard day.

And how much do we spend on bikes and bike bits? And some people on here openly discuss spending several thousand pounds on watches too.

Each to their own I say. And that bag looks okay to me - I wouldn't spend £500 on it, but I wouldn't think it wrong to carry it.

Well otherwise why did you 'stick to your guns', and post a thread about it, and continue to go on about why it's unacceptable without ever specifying why (though it's pretty obvious).

Yeah I think the bag would look a bit daft and that £500 is ridiculous but if it makes him happy then why not?
