A friend of mine is planning on riding back to the UK from North Portugal via Spain and France, so as the weather has been pretty dire of let we sat down to plan a route. I've had Bikemap on my phone for some time but not used it, not sure it'd be worth paying for either! Although the maps are good the mapping looked a little suspect so I mapped a few local routes that we know (and a few around places I used to live in UK) and sure enough there were more than a few questionable choices of routing.
Anyone have any experience and am I missing something?
We ended up using Google maps (we've had issues before) but cross referenced with Strava so we could make sure it was a viable cycle route.
Have you tried cycle.travel? I've not used it abroad but it does cover Europe and I've been very impressed with it in the UKย

zoom in and you'll find all the cycle routes and lanes in purple.ย
Off road we use the "carte ign" app free on play for Frace. Mapy is also pretty good and the vocal mode mode handy.
Komoot?ย ย
Seems to throw up better options in the continent than in the UK.
Cyclestreets.net app has worked brilliantly for me in Belgium, Nederlands, Estonia, Spain and Italy. Spain was a bit hit and miss - but I think that was shitty infrastructure...ย
Thanks everyone, more rain forecast next week so will have plenty of time time to explore these suggestions.
Next issue is a ferry from St Malo to Poole (1 bike and rider) and then Portsmouth to Santander a few days later (during June).
Finding a definite route seems a bit tricky, anyone had any experience?

Do you mean for the Poole to Portsmouth leg?ย That would start off on NCN (National Cycle Network) route 25 for a short leg until it hits the beach in Bournemouth and then pretty much NCN Route 2 the rest of the way.ย The downside to that approach is that it involves 3 mini-ferry legs but it's definitely a lot nicer than going through Southampton and then going through Fareham and Port Solent before dropping down to Portsmouth ferry port.
