Is it a mad idea ??

I fancy popping something over them to keep them hidden while in transit but not sure if it really is silly or could work. I'm thinking a nice stretchy one.

(just my random thoughts)

I'm thinking it would have to be a very good cover owing to the physics involved at motorway speeds.  Obviously the last thing anyone would want would be a massive piece of fabric tearing or working free from your vehicle and catching on someone's else's windcreen wipers or around the face/wheels etc of a following motorcyclist.  I'd be wrapping that cover in an array of secure tension-straps.  Personally I'd think a PITA, but then again I did once wrap my whole (new) bike in black tape as a thief deterrent.  It (the bike) looked very shit/much less blingy.

Fuel economy would take a bit of a hit.

Would improve braking though, like a dragster deploying its parachute...

Thule make one, can't see it making that much of a difference to MPG unless you have one of those racks that mounts the bike right up above the roofline of the car. Can't really see the point though, the whole appeal of having my bike on the rear rack is I don't have to faff when I get somewhere. If I wanted to spend a few minutes faffing and getting covered in mud/chain oil I'd take the wheels off and put it in the car.

On the back of a motorhome I would think it's be fine. On the back of a car it'd be like a parachute and potentially impact the handling the handling at speed, depending on what your rack and car are like.

It was not wanting to avertise the fact I had x thousands worth of bikes on the back of the car. Most of the bike is hidden from the drag factor just the wheels sticking out a bit each side. My first thoughts was some sort of strechy fabric covering the bulk of the frame.

I tried it last year in the hope of keeping salty spray to a minimum, it was awful.

I borrowed one of the ones in TINAS post from a mate with a camper.  Fuel economy was much worse, car was tricky in sidewinds and at speeds above 50 or so the thing acted like a cheap spoiler and made the front wheels feel light.  3 runs and I gave it back to my mate.
