I have been getting offers of around £100 which I am surprised at for a running car with an MOT and log book. Where is best to take it on the South Coast?

I've always been dubious of people claiming the scrap value of their cars. I suppose there's more money in it these days with parts being easier to shift over the internet, but in the past I've had to pay the scrap man to take road worthy cars away. Or they'd give you 10 or 20 quid if you dropped them off...

That was in the days when you'd see part-ex's on garage forecourts for £75, mind you. Things have changed a lot in recent years.

What condition are the tyres in.? They are worth a ton if there is a fair bit of meat left on them.

I got £150 for a non-running MGF, with the front suspension off it, 2 months ago. This is in Leicester.
I rang up the scrappie, he came round with his hoist truck, lifted it onto the back of his lorry, and didnt quibble at the £150.

He said there are a few bits that would come off, engine, wheels, lights, most of the rest goes for scrap.

mrsconsequence and i both donated cars to the fire service to use in their training 🙂

nice knowing they might have helped save someone's life, much rather that than 50-100quid that'd get spent on stuff we'd have forgotten about by now!

£170 for an Escort, a month after its MOT date with bald tyres and broken wishbones. That was picked up too, would have got £180 if I had dared to drop it off. Just a simple search gave quotes of £140 to £170. Make sure you get a certificate of destruction or you may still be responsible etc. etc.

alanl - who did you use? I've got to get rid of a shell but because it's got no wheels/suspension on it I haven't found anyone who will pay me for it or even lift it for free.

Get a quote from
http://www.cartakeback.com/

From what I've read they turn up, give you the cash they quoted and head off without any questions.

I saw a sign asking people to donate cars to the fire service the other day. It never occured to me that would be an option up until then. It's a great idea.

needs to be dealt with by an authorised scrappie - i.e. one registered and can complete the vehicle scrap section of the V5 (or what ever it is called these days)..

it is not formally scrap you will liable for it..

scrap prices are high at the moment so you will get money for dead cars.

Offered 175 by an online scrap dealer for a focus estate. It had 1 month of mot and 1 week of tax. We buy any car quoted 340 but after a bit of a knock down and fees i got 215.

Personally I'd strip and sell alloys/tyres, usable easy to remove parts on the drive and then call a scrappy to take the shell away. More effort but more cash. If you want shut just accept it's not worth much.

right ditch the urban myths 'scrap prices are high now' etc. EMR ( the countries largest recycling business.. scrap dealers) are paying today £145 a tonne for vehicles driven in.

the best way of doing it is to remove lights / lenses and part them out on ebay when you get to the yard stop outside and pull the battery out and push the car in. ( you ll get 200 a tonne for the battery) you could have the cat off as well as that ll get you 500 plus a tonne any alloy wheels ebay or scrap seperate about 250 a tonne.

copper has fallen from 4900 a tonne to 4380 today i think it was and lead is pennies as always..

rag and bone .. goldfish for the kids luv..

I was offered £150 as a minimum, more on negotiation, from a local (proper) breakers. But stuck it on Ebay instead and got £440 despite being a non-runner.

Remember if scrapping to take into account that you can get a refund of any full months of road tax. And you can rob valuable bits off it, but when we weighed in my brother's van they looked it over quickly and took money off for the parts that were missing (not to say this always happens- he'd weighed in a car there before and they didn't)

ebay. Did this with the girlfriends corsa that had four new tyres on it when the head went. Sold the tyres with wheels for £100 and the car for another £150 to a tat man who picked it up off the driveway. If you sell the rubber for less than you can buy them for then someone will buy them.

We require all our cars are de-polluted, e.g. all engine fluids removed, brake oils, clutch fluids, any air bag devices removed, seat belt pre-tensioners removed, air con gases etc etc etc. Before we accept them, as we dont want our work area contaminated.

We have a contract with local scrappie who does the above drops them off and picks them up 3 months later when they're in bits.

As bruneep says; when I was trying to shift my old Chevette I asked the fire brigade and they said exactly the same, wouldn't touch it.
