Came here to say She Sells Sanctuary. 🤷♂️👍 I can’t play the drums but I looked after a kit for a friend once for a week while he moved house. Spent the entire week with headphones on trying to play along with that!

I saw the Cult at Rock City same night after Siouxsie and the Banshees at the Royal Concert Hall, the contrast to Budgie who was all about the toms was quite something. The Mission Were support for the Cult. Siouxsie had a broken leg and perched up on one of those theatrical barstools with arms to swing about on like Jim Kerr used to have.

She Sells Sanctuary is a LOUD snare, not a good snare. That's like saying the penny farthing is the best bike because it has the biggest wheels
James Brown is a good shout though. Max Hallett aka Betamax of Soccer96 and The Comet is Coming always has a great snare sound too.
David Axelrod too. Loads of space. Oh, and Mitch Mitchell for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I do love a good jazz snare in a rock context.
Oh yeah, and Jaki Liebezeit from Can - Halleluwah is a favourite!

Stewart Copeland yes indeed. I was thinking "No Time This Time". Copeland's drumming with The Police owes a lot to Reggae which has a very tight high pitched snare.

Post punk snare. Always thought Pete Defreitas' snare in 'show of strength ' was particularly tasty and well micced, not too eighties sounding.
And the snare in 'light pours out of me' is very eighties and compressed but arguably influenced I am the resurrection?

Best snare sound, for me, is this one. Pretty simple but I want to know what they did to make it sound like that.
Not the least interesting fact about Loveless is that Colm O’Ciosaig was ill for much of the (lengthy) recording so his drumming style was entirely recreated from samples.

Re NMA Inheritance - as I heard the story at the time, Rob’s kit was set up & recorded in the lift at the rehearsal room in Little Germany, Bradford. I used to practice at the same place & I don’t think you’d fit my kit in that lift. So maybe it was his Slingerland Jazz kit. Or maybe ‘just a story’. I never got round to asking him 🙁
I always liked the snare on those old Barry White records. Super tight and compressed. A unique sound to my ears.
Both have been sampled a bazillion times because they sound great.
