She had a dream and boy was it a good one
So she chased after her dream with much desire
But when she get too close
To her expectations
Well the dream burned up
Like paper in fire

Right. This is starting to annoy me. And you won't like me when I'm annoyed...

The line "Is she really going out with him?" was the spoken introduction to the Shangri La's "leader of the pack" which was a hit in the mid-60s. Not a bad record, but not one to make ISRGOWH a killer first line.

The Damned's "New Rose" regarded by many as the first British punk release (in 1977? 1976? I ain't googling as I'll lose this post) also used this line as its spoken introduction. And suddenly it sounds superb.

The Joe Johnson track has it as the first line of the chorus. Meh.

All of which raises the question: is a spoken line of introduction a first line of the song? I think, given rap is included, it has to be. In which case sound effects of "chop chop chop" and a shout of "careful with that axe Eugine" might be up there. If sound effects are allowed.

Well f we're being pedantic...

Its Joe Jackson.

Fair point but i'd say it was fair game its very much a set up to unleashing the rest of the song.

Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct

A million housewives every day
Pick up a can of beans and say:
“What an amazing example of synchronisation”

Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he decreases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn

Four that wanna hold me
Two that wanna stone me

I think the word is - evocative:

"The distant echo of far away voices boarding far away trains,
To take them home to the ones that they love and who love them forever"

It's time the tale were told, of how you took a child and you made him old.

Oh is this the way they say the future's meant to feel? Or just 20,000 people standing in a field.

I don't know what the world may need
But I'm sure as hell that it starts with me

If you haven't listened to Cracker Teen Angst (b side to Low) then just go do it now. You can thank me for it later.

I would say that I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind

Or

I've got a little black book with my poems in

It's like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under
Broken glass everywhere
People pissin' on the stairs, you know they just don't care

Lots of good lyrics on here, but not all are first lines and even some of those first lines are first couples of lines or verses.

But if we're allowing those, and adding further to the lyrical mastery of Morrissey:

I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving. England is mine and it owes me a living.

and

Trudging slowly over wet sand / Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen

Can't believe this hasn't been done but...

My Michelle, Guns n Roses

"Yer Daddy works in porno,
Now that Mummy's not around
She used to love her heroin
But now she's underground"

Think the Happy Mondays has it for me though.

“Son, I'm 30
I only went with your mother 'cause she's dirty
And I don't have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see yeah"

Beautiful!

For the Smiths, I always liked

Belligerent ghouls
Run Manchester schools

and

I was minding my business
Lifting some lead off
The roof of the Holy Name church...

Your Dear John letter
Had grammatical errors
And failed to mention that you're a ****

(the internet seems to disagree that those are the lyrics, but sounds clear enough to me. I like the arseholery of it)

Peristalsis by Shooting At Unarmed Men, for those who can't see the video title

Sit on my face and tell me that you love me
I'll sit on your face and tell you I love you, too
I love to hear you oralize
When I'm between your thighs
You blow me away

Sit on my face and let my lips embrace you
I'll sit on your face and then I'll love you truly
Life can be fine if we both sixty-nine
If we sit on our faces in all sorts of places
And play, 'til we're blown away
