What's the best phone for taking photos with these days? I quite like the look of the Nokia N85 but have no experience of other makes/models.

Must be easy to use and not too chunky as well as taking good pics.

Cheers

I *think* Jedi has a Sony Ericsson. I've always liked the SE Cybershot ones, it's handy to have in my pocket for snapshots when I've not got a real camera with me.

SE Cybershot series all the way... these were all taken with my rather old K800i, I imagine the newest C905 would be even better... It ain't going to replace a DSLR or a decent compact, but I really enjoy using mine 🙂

I would say Nokia N95 or 96 have both bought a Sony camera and never use that now.

What richpips said. A phone will always be a compromised because of size/quality of lens processing algorithms, speed etc. You can get a tiny 7mb camera for less than £100

have a look at gsmarena.

Current 8mp came seem good. You may want a proper flash - rare.

Am liking my N82 - may not be quite as good as the latest but affordable and does lots of other stuff

N95 is great

The pics on my screen (ie when not hosted on the web) are as good as our digital cammera any way. It also means that as i keep my phone easy to get to i can easily take pics which is not so easy if you have to get the cammera out of my bag.

I've just put up a potato picture on my website that I took with my 1stgen Nokia n95, not a bad capture for a very beaten up phone thats over a year and a half old.

Thanks for comments.

I like potato.

My wife and I both need new phones. Not sure either of us could tolerate the SE interface. I tried one once, had to send it back immediately.

I'm still thinking one of the Carl Zeiss Nokias will be good enough for us.

… and as for

You're wanting to take photos. Take a camera.

Thanks for succinctly illustrating our requirement for a good cam-phone! It's for those times when we didn't know we'd be wanting to take photos, and didn't take a camera, of course.

We're not the sort of people who always carry around a camera bag with us everywhere we go; neither are we the sort to say to ourselves 'ooh, I must go out and take some photos'.

But we always seem to have our phones with us and have a good collection of poor-quality, blurred and poorly lit, but spontaneous and fun mementos. I think the camera phone is a brilliant invention.

Does that justify my life good enough?

Richpips – DK is spot on above. I am very lazy at taking a camera out and about with me (yes, surely the whole point of one I hear you shout), however I make sure I have a mobile phone and as such I have found the SE K800i to work very well for a spontaneous shot.

The optics are not perfect. There are odd occasions where you do get a slight 'goldfish bowl' effect on the images, but overall I'm quite satisfied with it. It's also a bit of a bargain considering it plays mp3s and video (i.e. films, TV), but it's quite chunky.

Here are a couple of random shots that illustrate the sort of image it produces (resized):

I agree with DK. Some of my favourite pictures of my family come from mobile phones as they are the ones where it is just a case of pulling it out of the pocket and getting the picture.

i had a Sony Ericsson K850i with a Cybershot camera, really good quality and lots of extras. I now have the N96, however dont think the camera is as good. I'd go for SE anytime.
