Testament - The Legacy
Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for The Deceiver
Savatage - Hall of The Mountain King

These 3 less mainstream offerings got a good amount of airtime in my youth.

ps Magnum were the first 'heavy?' band I saw live....

Music for people that don't like music

Is that just 80s metal? 70s AC/DC is awsome right?!

Music for people that don't like music

Troll.

mudshark

Are Nirvana metal though?

Cleverly repackaged for a different generation. Alice in Chains were much more of a heavy metal band than nirvana ever were. Better in every way too.

You don't need to go beyond 1980 for the answer BUT I can't make my mind up between.
Iron Maiden
Heaven and Hell
Blizzard of Oz
British Steel

Lots of classics up there but I'll add something less well known:

King's X - Gretchen goes to Nebraska (1989), their second album.

Fantastic harmonies, musicianship and other-worldly-ness.

Excellent choice, although Out of the Silent Planet (their first album) is better IMO.

Can I stick in guitar****yconcept-tastic Operation:Mindcrime by Queensryche (if we're going to ignore what is or isn't metal)

Oh yes - blown away by seeing this live at Hammersmith Apollo in 88/89ish

I grew up listening to 90's metal, and having a cassette player in my car has meant my cassettes now get a good airing again.

80's albums - Metallica - ..and Justice for all
Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers
Skid Row - Skid Row
and the album, for me that set it all off - Iron maiden - Iron maiden. I'll probably get flamed here, but the Paul Di'Anno albums are far superior to the Bruce Dickenson ones

Oooooo, lots to choose from, some excellent choices guys, BUT, mine are-
Magnum "Storytellers Night"
Queensryche "Operation - Mindcrime"

😯
No, sorry, there is no way on this earth Magnum are a metal band, they're as Prog as it comes. I've got several tracks from "Storytellers..." on my phone that crop up fairly regularly, and I saw them four or five times back when that album came out, along with Metallica and Anthrax, and Magnum could never be considered 'Metaaaaaaaaaaaal' \m/.
😀

Too much choice and pretty much all my choices done above.

If I had to pick just one - Kill 'em all - if nothing else for the wonderful Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth) and Four Horsemen.

You're all wrong apparently. It's Metal Church - The Dark, closely followed by Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love.

That's what my hair metal loving GF says anyway.

For me, AfD. Kings X is an interesting call - if you listen to them now many more recent bands sound similar. Whether they were directly influenced is hard to say.

Jethro Tull - Crest of a Knave.

The flute is a heavy, metal instrument!

Blizzard of Oz is a good call. Ozzy went from singing about religion and nuclear war with Sabbath to solo stuff about werewolves and porn movies, but Blizzard is ace. Revelation into Steal Away the Night takes some beating.

For me:

Sarcofago - INRI.

Not strictly metal but they'll do:

Napalm Death - From Enslavement to Obliteration
Terrorizer - World Downfall

Nobody has mentioned Exodus - Bonded by Blood. Excellent thrash metal.
Add to that Reign in Blood and Ride the Lightening.

'Danzig' by Danzig is a damn good shout.
Saw them supporting Metallica on the 'Justice' tour in the NEC in Sept '88.
Pure evil. That logo of theirs is so iconic too.
I think any band with a member called Chuck Biscuits deserves to win 😀

Ha ha. I will give you that, more rock than metal. Good band though.
I remember some bizzare scandinavian thrash bands from the 80's
Bathory were up there with the good ones

The 80's had some great metal/rock bands. From the prog rock of Magnum and Marillion (now with Steve Hogarth/Seasons End) to Zodiac mindwarp and the Love Reaction!!

During my early teens , all of my friends developed purely ROCK (shakes fist) tendencies ,so by default I've heard most of the albums mentioned above... 😕

I'm nominating, 1984 - Van Halen.
Introduce Yourself Faith No More.
Nothing's Shoocking - Jane's Addiction

Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman were both pretty special too.

Everything after that was pretty dire though.

lots of good stuff mentioned here

On my playlist around 1988ish was:
Judas Priest - Ram it Down (painkiller was 1990 btw)
Maiden - Killers
Whitesnake '87
Metallica ride the lightening
megadeth (just to balance it) peace sells.
Danzig (aka evil-elvis)

plus some soft rock, fair bit of goth and some....er....aha.

couldn't choose between them.

Oh how could I forget, Fastway - Trick or Treat, soundtrack to my fave film. 🙂

It's 1980 on planet rock years at the moment. All sorts of good stuff being played.

^^ I tuned in and found them playing Peter Gabriel - Games without frontiers, planet rock is ok but sometimes they miss the target and sound more like Absolute radio, bland. Now going to see what TeamRock are playing.

Venom, Black Metal or At war with satan. Loved them back then & still play them now.

Oh here's another I used to play to death..

No not the bike company! Giant, last of the runaways..

[img] [/img]

Another that I just couldn't stop playing, although I just have (not played it for ohh, at least 8years)

Dokken, Tooth and Nail..

[img] [/img]

But really, for me, there has and will always only be one Band and One Album that defines me and my love of music..

I hand to you Ratt, Invasion of Your Privacy.
Play loud, hard and even louder..

They are definitely more of a hard rock band. Angus would tell you they're a rock and roll band. But If you can't count their music alongside metal then you might as well rule out a lot of other bands - Maiden, Priest, Dio, GnR etc etc etc.....even Sabbath to an extent, none of them really "Metal" in the current sense of the word. Just classic rock.

What a load of crap. Maiden, Sabbath, Priest etc practically invented metal.

My choice would be Ride the Lightning, following closely by some Maiden of some sort.

Default answer would be Metallica - Master of Puppets, loads of other great suggestions on here, well done on the Dnazig.

Can't believe there's no mention of Overkill - Years of Decay is a Thrash classic!

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell - Recorded in 89 but released in 1990 - damn 🙁
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Testament - Practice what you Preach
Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver
Danzig - Danzig
Anthrax - Among the Living and State of Euphoria
Motely Crue - Dr Feelgood
Almighty - Blood, Fire and Love
Skid Row - Skid Row
Annihilator - Alice in Hell
Faith no More - The Real Thing
Mordred - Fool's Game

Simples

Kill Em All

by far the greatest of all metal albums, I've owned most of those mentioned, however no-one has mentioned Septic Death yet, still got that on vinyl.

I'd say there wasn't much between your top 3 and worst 3 - all pretty similar AOR style rock.
