I have a DS214play that is fitted with a pair of RAID1 2TB WD Red HD's. Another one is on its way out, but I fancy a pair of 4TB drives and increase the storage. Should I just buy 2x 4TB WD Red's or is there something else I should buy?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

https://www.backblaze.com/

They do some reporting on most (and least) reliable drives. I have a look in there on the rare occasion i have a drive fail.

WD Red do seem to be the default recommendation, because supposedly Reds are optimised for NAS use.

If you wanted to go really wild you could consider SSDs; again, WD Red are the most widely recommended, but at £230ish per 2TB, quite a bit more spendy. Different setup, but I went with 2x Crucial MX500 for mine recently. No complaints yet (it's only been a week, mind)

Backblaze reports +1

When I put my DS1520 together I wanted Hitachi drives. I ended up with Toshiba 10TB N300s. They’ve been fine for the past couple of years.

WD have been a bit hit and miss for me in a previous DS.

My other DS. An old 4-bay one. That has a mix of ironwolf and Red.

The performance/responsiveness difference between the 2014 NAS and the 2020 NAS is marked. Perhaps consider a NAS with SHR and enjoy a bit more zip?

I use the old one to backup select content on the new one.

I've used both Ironwolf and Red.  Both seem fine.  I tend to mix them if I'm replacing them at the same time, just because

RAID1, why care. That's the point of it. Whack in whatever is cheapest.

Agreed.. If you can 'hot swap' a suspected duff drive and the array gets rebuilt .. Why pay more?

Because the drives that fail "regularly" cost almost the same as those that don't?
And i don't like spending money...

I use 6tb WD red's in my NAS..... I'd also consider the equivalent from seagate, but the WDs re always a little cheaper. I've had one DOA, but otherwise, nothing to report.
