I think that his loathsomeness was established a while back. Certainly by 2016 people should have been aware that Ecclestone was somewhat impressed by Adolf Hitler, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin:

He also briefly flirted with Tony Blair, who felt sufficiently indebted to Ecclestone that he did him a rather large favour.
Bernie was/is about power. Sure money is a part of that, but it’s the power over people he’s always seemed to relish. He seemed to take a perverse delight in telling people who were looking to host GP races that he’d bankrupt them over time.

The expression ‘he who dies with the most toys wins’ is usually used in a wryly amused manner, but in the case of the likes of Eccleston there’s nothing amusing about them at all.
I have to admit that Eccleston isn’t someone who I’ve ever given much thought to over the years, or read anything about particularly, so I really wasn’t aware of just what an odious little shit he was.
I can't remember who it was (one of the designers I think), and a google search throws up no luck, but some-one in the F1 world remarked in an interview that in his narrow field of contract negotiation, he reckoned Bernie to be the smartest bloke he'd ever met. Outside of that however, the gist of the conversation was that he's not the sharpest tool. He's never said anything in public that dissuaded me of that.

It's definitely not "rich person" equates to 'tool' or the incessant flashing of cash or its trappings. As above, I'm counting at least one very comfortably well-off person - couple at least - in my circle (one I've known since school days) and you really would't have much idea of the scale - beyond the usual comfortably well-off. Maybe that's it, they're comfortable and that's sufficient.
