try Snozzle's "Smugglers"

personally I dont like rich strong beers so I cant really recommend any, but St Austell is a good brewery all the same.

Innes & Gunn for a lighter taste, but Tullibardine 1488 for the full-on experience.

Another vote for Innes & Gunn. Beer with a lovely vanilla flavour.

Isn't it the other way around with Innis and Gunn? The reason the beer exists is because somebody wanted to try and make a whisky finished in beer barrels so they brewed a load of beer and stuck it in oak barrels to impart some of it's flavour into the wood. Only they later found that the oak was also flavouring the beer and making it taste really nice so they started to sell the beer as well as the whisky! I guess the casks would have come from the states so i don't know if they would have been new ones or old bourbon ones?

I believe they now make a beer which has been matured in rum barrels, haven't found any on sale yet so don't what's it like.

Rum one is okay but not as nice as whiskey in my opinion

Golden Glory + 1!!

All that whisky matured in beer barrels and vice versa is just a gimmik IMO. Haven't tasted a nice one yet, although Innes and Gunn comes closest to being good.

Simples solution: get a nice ale or beer and a nice whisky, get a glass for each then drink together in true old man style. That way you can actually enjoy them both at the same time without ruining either. Your grampa knew what he was doing back then.

Innis and Gunn is awesome, though I do think it is done in just oak barrels as opposed to whiskey soaked ones.
For a real (expensive) treat try Orkney Dark Island Special Reserve Limited Edition.
