MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Firstly, yes I know but it's bean to cup or nothing.
Secondly, which reliable bean to cup machine that will produce consistent results?
Milk frother would be useful but not essential.
Budget not been set but the example I've been sent by mrswwswas would indicate it's not a significant factor.
My Krups (TTB145001P) has been faultless for two and a half years and the coffee is still the same as it was when it was new, I run it with the water filter installed as the waters hard here and the lime scale kills things quick, cleaning tabs and filters aren't to expensive and if you're in a soft water area you don't need em,
John Lewis were the best for Krups machines when we got ours..
The delonghi one was frequently which rated as a good one - about £280 in sales).
We've a Severin s2+ (plus...PLUS i tell thee..no s2 standard for the DrP household...). It's great, really able to fine tune the volume/temp of the water, and makes a lovely cup.. but it's more needy than a needy thing - always winging that it needs to be cleaned/descaled/new filter..
It's german, and I suppose these are in order to keep it running smoothly TBH.
Usually £600ish, but can be had in sales again for about £350. I paid £250, but you know..i drive a hard deal..
DrP
My Delonghi one has been great. The steam thing is a bit of a pain but i don't use it much. My only real complaint would be that the water tank isn't really big enough - the machine uses quite a lot of water for its self cleaning routine.
Oh and it quite noisy.
Sage FTW.
Welcome to 2009 OP.
Sage +1
thanks for your contribution bikebouy 🙂
I'm currently being shown one that has it's own app. This feels like a bit more complexity than is strictly needed to make a cup of coffee (even with a bean to cup machine) and a guarantee of built in obsolescence.
Will wave the above about and see what the reaction is.
I think main thing my wife wants is a 'press single button to produce a latte' type thing so anythign with wands and manual frothing is going to be a no-no.
Sage, I too have a Sage.
😆
£500 from John Lewis.

sufficient bells n whistles to make latte/cappuccino/espresso etc.
love mine.
You either want "a hot drink" or you want a coffee. A press-a-button-for-a-latte machine will give you the former. IMHO.
There is faff in making a decent coffee, the same for tea. But its worth the investment in both time and money. With my Sage it takes 2 minutes to make a flat white (with pretty picture in the top*), not much more than waiting for the kettle to boil and making an instant.
* mostly they look like a c*ck-and-b*lls but non-the-less the thought and effort is there.
Delonghi Magnifica here. Whatever model that was on sale at the time. ESAM4000 maybe? You have to froth your own milk if you want a fizzy coffee, but apparently nuking the milk for 45s before you make the coffee into it is a suitable alternative.
The impression I got from the ones that did it for you was that you'd spend all your time cleaning the milk bit.
We have a also Jura. It's been flawless. Uses quite a lot of water, which we filter with a Britta. Would buy another if it died. Has a milk frothed, but I use an aerolatte whisk instead.
Miele, expensive but worth it.
Rinses itself after use . The one with the external milk container are great as easy to wash up the flask .they have every adjustment you can think of .
I got a second hand one and it's been faultless with great support for servicing, de scaling tabs etc from Miele on line .
DeLonghi job here - second hand from eBay a couple of years ago, and it's been great. I nuke half a mug of milk in the microwave for a minute which is as long as the coffee machine takes to turn on. I sometimes wave an ikea milk frother at the milk before a double espresso goes on top, but mostly it's flat white.
My folks have a separate milk heater and frother thing, if frothy milk is a must.
Gaggia Anima Deluxe here - reliable, simple and easy to clean
Set the grind as fine as possible and the water temp as high as possible and the strength as high as possible and it does a pretty good espresso. If you get the deluxe then the milk frothing is done for you
Do any of the above come with an automatic beard groomer on top?
Delongi Magnifica - relatively cheap, been heavily used for 2.5 years and still perfect.
Gaggia Brera here, love it, had it about three years.
Delonghi Magnifica- just coming up two years old. Had it serviced as it was getting a big clogged up in places that didn't look very user serviceable. Sixty quid and came back like new. With a note saying '4 descales and 4544 coffee measures dispensed. So in no particular order
a) makes great coffee. Only ever used beans
b) is bloody noisy and feels the urge to irrigate itself every operation. Luckily we have thick walls!
c) never use the milky thing. Coffee should be black in the same way beer should be warm
d) Based on the stats, I probably drink too much coffee
Delonghi Perfecta here, had it for about 5 years.
Still works perfectly. Makes good (in my opinion anyway) coffee. The milk jug thing makes a pretty good latte or cappuccino and sits nicely in the fridge.
It is a bit noisy and the water tank could be bigger but other than that it's ace.
Another Delonghi Magnifica, I think its just over two years old now. I always keep spare filter cartridges and descaler but I'm sure it doesn't request maintenance as much as it should! I've brushed out the inside once (meant to do it regularly I think) and its going fine.
Makes really good froth, leave it on the steamed milk setting and then keep the wand just under the surface like the Pro's do. The froth setting just blows bubbles.
Its had a couple of funny moments recently, twice I've opened the steam wand briefly to purge the water, and then when I started frothing it pumped out hot water instead of steam (easy to catch as it sounds different) and once it scared the cats shitless as I opened the steam wand and nothing happened, after about 5 seconds there was a big pop a huge hiss of steam 🙂 (hopefully its not about to break)
Don't do it! Hold out for the separate grinder (someone had to say it)
Why? The DeLonghi machines have an adjustable burr grinder already.
When my Jura dies I am so having a Sage... the Oracle is in my sights, just depends if I can justify it when the time comes (or it is on interest free like the bike!)
Magnifica's are half price at Currys...

Control, choice, flexibility, taking it on holiday (sad but true). You generally get better quality buying separate IMHO.
