Just been turning out our wardrobes and found three of these coats

Does anybody still buy/wear them?

For some strange reason they became fashionable with yuppies (definitely not of those)presumably been replaced with all the lightweight breathable stuff these days
When I worked outside many years ago they were the only waterproof jackets that didn't make you lose about a gallon of sweat an hour, damn hardwearing too albeit bloody expensive

Funnily enough, I saw one in a shop that sells Diesel/D&G etc today, so they must be fashionable somewhere.

I used to wear one on the motorcycle. I'd quite like one again - what size are they?

Slebs started wearing them again recently so there was a bit of a comback, hence why Barry has seen them in "trendy" places. I remember them being in fashion in the eighties for a while, but most people wearing Barbour rip-offs. Bloody horrible things. Always hated 'em and I have to stop myself making sweeping generalisations about anyone I see wearing one.

I think theyr'e anything but trendy. I've had both Barbour & Belstaff jackets yonks ago when I was riding trials & I never got wet, but theyr'e really 'working' jackets. I don't think you'd see many Dales farmers wearing Goretex!

I always think that a barbour is as follows:

If it were a car it would be a landrover or MG

If it were a shoes it would be a deck shoes or hunter wellies

If it were a drink it would be pimms

Its just British

Think they are 42in or maybe the long one is a 44in, if you were interested could have a better look.
The longer one had a rather nice press stud fitting fleece for when it got very nippy, found that too along with a large size hood

Strangely enough I wore one on a motorbike too, came off and it protected me rather well

They were the outdoors man 1st choice many many years ago - now they prefer more modern material that keeps you dry without the need to wax the jacket up every month or so.

Normally sported by the New Town dwelling Range Rover driving posh **** that is trying to pretend they have a big house in the country. Or gamekeepers.

Mine are superb. Own a couple. Or is it three? Can't really remember!

They've been tents, sledges, picnic rugs and sleeping bags. They've been used on the bumper of the car when I needed to nudge someone else out of the way. They've been used as dog beds.

Oh, and I use them for shooting and fishing in rough weather.

Only thing is.....they have to be old and abused! New ones make you look like an Italian tourist in Harrods!

As functional kit for bad weather, they're superb.

I have one, must be getting on for 20 years old, wear it now and then, it feels good! Yes, I've noticed Howie's have a worn look waxed jacket on their site now, so I'm presuming they are becoming fashionale again!?

Had a Barbour quilted jacket before they became fashionable. Love it, but hate folk thinking I'm wearing it to follow the current trend, so it'll stay in my wardrobe until they go back out of fashion. Then I'll dust it down and rock it with my tootal cravat!

Yup - I'm too cool for school.

Belstaff was fashionable last year, soon to be coming to a Helly Hansen wearer near you.

I love Belstaff although they arent CHEAP!!!

I was once stood a taxi office in Soho in the wee hours on a sunday wearing a moleskin Hackett quilted jacket. As my taxi came, someone said 'ah that must be your landrover and gundogs outside for you' (how everyone laughed) Bastids 🙄

I've got a Barbour hanging up, use to use it for work but haven't done for the past few years. Ripped mine and Barbour did a great repair on it shame the over waxed it and got the wax on the inside at the hem. Oh and they stink when they get warm.

i do a lot of dog walking so interested if you are knocking them out? used to have one years ago for the motor bike and you cant beat them for quality. prohibitively expensive though to keep the proles away.

I remember riding a trial at Bollihope in Weardale, probly in the early 1980's & I had my faithfull Barbour on(but it might have been the Belstaff) & the weather was horrendous. It did everything that was cold, blew a gale, rained, sleeted, snowed, the lot & I remember peeling my gloves off my completely numb hands & extracting myself from my jacket. It was so stiff I stood it up, the only bits that would fold were the elbows!
I was frozzzen! but dry.

What size are you?

There is one shorter one (Border) in good nick, another Border which will be a size down as I got a bit slimmer at one stage, in fair condition
Also a longer one (Beaufort) which is well worn and in need of a good re-wax. Re-wax wouldn't hurt any of them really I suppose

Going to be a bit pricy to post as they are rather weighty, anyway let me know if you are interested please and I will check out the sizes

Oh and got the fleece for the Beaufort too and a hood for any of them as well
Just had a look and the fleece liner is 40 quid, hardly wore mine and even a hood is over 20 quid

Must have been better off than I thought 20 years ago, no coincidence that my daughter is now 18, damn expensive those kiddy things

Regularly wear mine in Aus (Sunshine Coast). They go over a t-shirt and shorts a treat when it's hammering down and I have to pop out to do a water maintenance job before we get flooded*

AndyC

* It rains more in SE Queensland than the Cotswolds**
** Except in the past few months - hasn't rained at all.

Im afraid I have some bad news for you Barbour fans... I have it on good authority that the man who turned Burberry into the select, refined and tasteful preserve that it so obviously is...has been retained to do much the same for Barbour.

Oh joys 😉

What re-wax for the gorbals mizzle?

TNH - Ive always been too tight to buy an original and so I get knock-offs from Midland Shire Farmers (or "Countrywide" if I must...)

I've just checked mine - it's a Border. It's a good lenth, and I was thinking of a new coat this year, but as they seem to be coming into fashion, I think I'll put the money to something else!

I had a Belstaff motorcycle jacket when I was sixteen, that did stink - wet or dry! (no idea what happened to that)

🙂

I re-waxed mine just the other day. Border jacket, 1988/89. It's getting a bit worn in places now, hoping for a new one from santa.

Used to get them issued every 6 months when I worked outdoors. Melted in the summer, froze solid in the winter, and not exactly breathable.

The only two things going for them like some on mentioned was they doubled as a motorbike jacket, and they were pretty tough thorn proof and never snagged.

You can spot the fakers because they wear ones that always look brand new.

I've owned several Barbours though they do get a tad wiffy when you wear them around horses. I don't think they're that good but I buy them out of habit. The stocksman's coats are great as they're water-resistant and your trousers stay dry.

My motorbike jacket is a 10-year-old Belstaff - love it.

I've discussed Agas, Barbours and Belstaffs recently - next, I'll be applying for a Bodan catalogue........or perhaps not.

Still got mine from when I used to work on a farm, again must be 20 years + old.

Working stacking bales one year found a nest of baby mice under a bale, so decided to stash them in my pocket, to release them latter in a hedgerow.

Completely forgot & few days latter arrived to work to see the farm picup alarm going off, with everyone trying to switch it off.

Apparently some mice had got in and destroyed the electrics & chewed a hole though my Barbour pocket which I had left in there 😉
