...paying in £72 in mixed coin?

It's all separated and bagged correctly, but I've just got a sneaking suspicion that the bastards will try to impose some kind of "handling charge" when I hand over 10 kilos of small metal discs.

Any ideas?

Certainly an option Mr Nutt, though I'd like the money to end up in my account rather than on the pavement, you understand.

They shouldn't do so, as long as it's bagged properly.

They're still b'stards, though...

pop down to the local supermarket, put in the coinstar machine and out pops a voucher that you exchange for cash.

or pay a bill with it, thats what i do.

Coinstar machines charge a % of what you pay in though.

Bag it up properly & give it a go. If they enforce a maximum number of bags go back with the remainder the next day. I wouldn't pay.

Just been.

They couldn't be more helpful. BoS, business cash, no charges and a smile from the lady.

(On a macro-economic scale, they're still bastards though...)

FWIW coinstar charges 6 or 7% ish for the privilege, but most supermarkets have a coin machine in those self service tills. Morrison deffo have one where you can just tip coins in and it'll sort for you... Shame the system they use is so cack!

Do the supermarket machines still have the option of spending the money in-store and not paying the % charge?

Not just me then. I'm amazed how rubbish and difficult it is compared to other supermarkets where the self-service tills just work - presumably they didn't want to make the check out experience better than the rest of your visit.

Nat West didn't charge me for about eight bags worth although they insisted on it being paid into my account (money laundering avoidance apparently)

Only copper and small silver, can't imagine drug barons laundering their ill gotten gains by this method

I paid £145 in silver into Barclays last week - no problem at all. I had counted and bagged it though, doesn't take long.

Any branch that does business cash should do it no problem. Really small branches might just not be able to, I worked for a while in a little village branch and the cash safe was just too small to deal with bulky deposits, so we had a cap and if anyone had any more they had to go to the bigger central branch. Which some people hated but it's a bit like going to the tiny local corner shop and trying to buy 500 cans of stella.

Coinstar machines aren't actually bad value though if you really don't want to count and bag it but counting coins is strangely relaxing and satisfying isn't it.
