I remember hearing Venom's first album, and going to see them just after they'd released Black Metal. They were (unsurprisingly for a band whose publicity shots showed them looking exceptionally unscary on Whitley Bay beach) more than a bit crap but hey, they came from my home town. I saw them a couple of times and they never got any better.

Imagine my surprise to find that they're still going. Presumably no better than they ever were, and after a million lineup changes, but they're still earning a crust on the nostalgia death-black-stanic metal circuit.

I was gobsmacked to see that a band of such extraordinarily limited talent continue to make a living out of music. I'd have bet good money that they'd be the very last people to do this.

So who else are you surprised is still going?

Europe are still going

I think they're like a like a lot of bands, had a career break, then realised they weren't going to have solo success and eventually got back together. They still do the festival circuit.

I'm going to see the Wedding Present on the Bizarro tour too, 19th Nov at the 02 in Bournemouth.

Then Atari Teenage Riot the next night and Al Murray the night after that.

Levellers definitely - playing The Duchess in York in the not too distant future.

New Model Army are currently on their 30th Anniversary tour. Not quite a world tour but certainly a tour of Europe & the Americas

Stray are still going, remember when they first started as teenagers and bought their first album. Watched them many times at such illustrious venues as Walthamstow Assembly Hall, they were also the backing band for Kiss when I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon

Can also remember Iron Maiden doing one of their numbers, All In Your Mind, probably their best track and bit of a gamble having a 9 minute opener to your first album

Buffalo Tom, pretty much thought they'd packed it in then after a 10 year hiatus they came back with a stonking album

tbh Bill Janovitz never stopped making music and release a few very good solo albums

at their best:

Don't know why, but American streets and houses have always appealed to me

Therapy?... Still knocking out one good album followed by one crap album on their timehonoured routine, and varying from fat to thin, and changing drummers like I change my pants (every 3 years), and playing smaller and smaller venues yet still absolutely fantastic. How many times have the Wildhearts split and reformed in the same time period?

Redwood? Anyone remember Redwood?"

Well done, now I feel old. Just put on Colourblind and thought "Why did I buy this album? Oh yeah, they suppored A. In 1997." 🙁

I saw Therapy when they toured with The Wildhearts 5 years ago, a great night!

Therapy?.....that takes me back. Thing is, they were actually very good.

Some of the bands mentioned on this thread were terrible from the off, but somehow they've kept plugging away regardless.

Big Country just announced a 30 th anniversary tour, sadly less the brilliant Stuart Adamson RIP, but who better to replace him IMHO than Mike Peters of The alarm ,Who has been on the road pretty much constantly with The Alarm in various line ups and solo, since early 80s ,he is probably the hardest worker in the industry.

The hardest working man in showbusiness? Oh, I don't think so.

Reckon I will be going to one of the gigs then, my daughter is bonkers about Big Country. No idea why, but she has all the albums including all the rareties collection along with the soundtrack one too.
She listened to my old copy of the Crossing on vinyl and that was it, could be worse because I quite enjoy their stuff as well

RE Europe

I think of them as pre reforming - poodle hair rocklite for the masses and post reforming with some mighty dark rifftastic rock

don't like pre but love post

3 great albums post reforming that I play a lot

yes they do festivals cos they can but they tour in their own right, earlier this year academy 2 was as full as i've seen it

FWIW

Just received my Wedding Present monthly news update to find out who's reformed and supporting them in London.

Question is, will she still be as foxy 20 years on?

I couldn't resist though. So, I'm seeing the WP in Portsmouth next saturday, and then again in London on Dec 13th supported by The Primitives.

(off to see if I can find my baggy mohair Robert Smith style cardie)

Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing Budgie again - but I don't live in Eastern Europe, Stratford-upon-Avon, Dudley or Australia!

Will check out George Thorogood as well - he's good!
