[Closed] Bands or Musicians that should call it quits

Just listening to Deezer flow and it has me thinking about bands or musicians that should just stop and retire. Nothing worse than hearing something that was once great slide in to mediocrity.

Prophets of Rage - How can these be the same musicians that produced the music of RATM and Audioslave. Even Street Sweeper Social Club were decent (mainly due to Boots Riley), but by Christ this is shite. I started playing bass because of Tim Commeford and now feel embarrassed for him,

Rolling Stones - Should have died in a plane crash / of drugs overdoses in the 70’s. It would have been the right thing to do.

The Stones are still amazing live regardless of age

mcCartney gets my vote. He's abysmal live. A parody act.

Morrissey

How can someone who i adored so much in the 80's have turned into what he is now.  Such a **** that i get a slightly queasy feeling even when Hatful of Hollow comes up on my mp3, let alone anything from the more recent past.

I bet bet it’s the songs from the 60’s and early 70’s that sound good though.

I agree about Paul McCartney.  He is really terrible.  I was shocked at how bad he was at the London Olympics ceremony . He doesn't need the cash so why not call it a day?

Any Beetle still alive. They were never any good, just in the right time right place.

The Stones are fine, at least they are as animated now as they were back then.

Rod Stewart, dear Lord. Stop crooning.

Chaka Khan (spelling) recent new release is utterly abysmal.

Rick Astley, yeah... we know “never gonna give you up” actually we did back in the 80’s

Collapsed way before that, when I jacked it in...

But, y'know... got to do something with the retirement! 😉

I think all these responses are complete bullshit.

Any performer should keep going for as long as they want or can. Same as any other time... if you don't like it, don't listen.

Let's see you perform.

Eh? I don’t because I’ll probably be crap too, that doesn’t mean I can’t say that some artists are crap and shouldn’t perform. What an utterly bizarre comment.

I'll third McCartney - truly awful performance at the 2012 Olympics.

U2 - or more specifically Bonio - can't stand the bloke and the fact that he/they gave me a 'free' (unwanted I may add....) album on iTunes which was pretty crap (probably why they had to give it away??) is even more reason.

That Drake  bloke - what he turns out can't even be classed as music - utter rubbish - stick him on the same cannibal inhabited Island as Kanya West.

Th problem with Kanye West is some of his early stuff was superb, and I really like Ghost Town. It is frustrating though as he is a massive chuntering ****bucket.

I can't believe the first band on this list wasn't U2.

I was a complete U2 devotee in my in my youth, and thought they were incredible both at Live Aid and the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope performance in New York.

But they desperately need to give it a rest now. They haven't really done anything interesting since Zooropa.

EDIT: I only partially agree with Woppit. I think that there are musicians who just do what they do, and do it well. The problem is the whole affected image thing. I mean, Bono, et al. are still trying it on like they might of when they were in their 20s, and there is something artificial about that. Someone like the late Tom Petty by contrast, or Bruce Springsteen, or a host of others, just age well and come across as who and what they are: older guys who still have something to offer musically.

I don't know exactly what the difference is, but I know it when I see it.

Not really. The argument is that musicians should stop performing because they're getting old, not because they're crap.

As long as people are prepared to pay attention, good for them I say.

There's those that can (whether you like them or not) and there's those that bitch about it who couldn't entertain anybody with an amusing fart.

That's the thing about has beens. They’re not wannabees, they actually have been.

My list would be too long, but I agree with "why should they quit" - as long as I can ignore them it's fine. If they have a market of sad, middle aged gits who need to revisit the past, then keep sucking their cash off em I say. And in the case of someone like Brian Wilson, a lot of cash!

Nope, because they are now shite compared to what they used to be was the argument. Can we not have a tiny bit of fun in this place anymore without someone getting all serious or upset?

I did, but I knew when to quit! 😆

Fun! Yeah:

Paul Weller

Rick Astley

Human League

Any band on tour listed in the back of Uncut magazine

All tribute bands

All bands who have become tribute to themselves bands (eg. From the Jam (arf!)

Judas Priest (cos they were a shit novelty act and now people take them seriously!)

Chas & Dave (see above)(they had them on Later ffs! I coulda kicked my telly in)

Queen! You're not QUEEN, your singer is DEAD!

Erm, I'll be back 😆

If the old rockers want to carry on for the love of it, let them. If you don't like, don't listen.

But... what's with all the clean-living, tea-total, cr@p. I know these guys are old but what happened to die before I get old, eh? It's hardly rock and roll [rolls eyes]

He's got nothing left, the tank's been empty for at least ten years but he still persists. Walk away Perry, your work here is done.

Completely agree with this. Springsteen continues to be interesting and the likes of Neil Young and Van Morrison appear to just do what interests them which I think is great.

I would, but when you’ve got flow on whilst doing the washing up it’s tricky not to listen. Soap suds and touchscreens are poor bedfellows 😕

I always get a sinking feeling when rock frontmen give up the drugs or drink. You just know the next album will be really shit. On the flip side, when a singer gets divorced you know the next album will be a masterpiece

I think all these responses are complete bullshit.

There's nothing more depressing or sad than a 70 year old man singing songs about the pomp of youth that were written 50 years beforehand by someone else, about a time that doesn't exist anymore. The Rolling Stones should have stopped because they stopped innovating and being original at some point in the mid 70's and have stood still ever since; more than happy to ride the crest of the success of a handful of songs ever since. </span>

That is pretty much the definition of a waste of talent. What could've Richards have done if he didn't have the comfort blanket of another world tour, what would Jagger had achieved if he wasn't having to practice  singing Paint It Black?

Same goes for Shed 7 - another joke band people now take seriously!

Billy Joel. Obviously, it would have been better if he’d never actually started

I've no idea how he sounds now, probably not too good given his age(69), just like I vaguely recall Elton sounding pretty awful at Queen Liz's party celebrations IIRC a few years back (2012?).

But over the years, Billy wrote some absolute classics, at least IMO. To randomly pick a few...

Holy hell there is a lot of gash spouted above.  Billy Joel not talented? Beatles right place right time?  Paul Weller rubbish live.  You may not love their music but lacking in writing, instrument, producing, performing talent?  Do me a favour.

McCartney is still arsed with making new music.  I dont love it, but I respect he still has the volition and the passion to do it.

Elton John and his farewell tour is exploitation in my book. Still an awesome musician.

All the crap bands that do small local 80s vs 90s nights, like

Steps

5ive (even tho there's about 2)

& Blue

Had the misfortune of seeing Blue last yeah, the tall ones interaction with the crowd was mostly telling unfunny stories about him getting wasted. What a dick.

He was awful. Self indulgent shite. I would honestly prefer to listen to The Carpenters or Donny and Marie Osmond, at least nobody tried to pretend they should be taken seriously. Billy Joel sang lame vacuous drivel dressed up as profound social commentary. Worse than Roger Waters at his pretentious worst.

Red Hot Chili Peppers.  To my ears Blood Sugar Sex Magik is incredible, one of my favourite albums ever and still sounds fresh, but they've been on a gradual and disappointing decline into soft rock since, to the extent that it almost soils the older stuff that I love.

I think the issue for many bands stems from something one of the Gallagher brothers said about how easy it is when you're young with fire in your belly, writing and singing about the things in your life, which you also have in comon with your fans, who are also young and going through the same things. This becomes exponentially harder the older you get and once you've made millions, as you lose what you have in common with your fans and are generally less pasionate about things that make great song lyrics.

he has been ill for a very long time, probably made worse by too much medication keeping him below where he should be.

However watch the Smile live concert and watch how much better he has been recently - the joy and happiness he has got in that concert seems to have scrubbed 30 years off him - finally happy his magnum opus is finished. And wow what a thing to listen too. He still has a decent voice too, yes it's changed but its still good.

But McCartney - errr I don't like beatles stuff but respect whats he done - his voice has just disintegrated now hasn't it?

i don't think you can say because someone is old they shouldn't continue, i saw Iggy Pop last saturday and at 71 he put all the other acts on the bill to shame, even some of his new stuff isn't bad at all.

Jules Holland is often a showcase for acts that should of given up, usually them limping through a song croaking and out of puff, followed by Jules showing them a video from 30 years ago and going "look how good and young you were here....."

Seconded, with a quibble on the start of the decline - IMHO One Hot Minute was their last really interesting album and certainly couldn't be categorised as heading towards soft rock, if anything it's their hardest rocking album of all (the main criticism levelled at it was that the funk was missing).

I'd agree now that they're beyond tedious, every song I've heard since seems to just be a variation on "heyyyyyy hoooooooo.... we're from California"

Was gonna say Manic Street Preachers (debut is in my album display on the wall!) but their new album is supposed to be good. Not that I'll listen to it despite having bought it for my mum for her upcoming birthday (she asked for it, and she is *whispers* 79)

what is abysmal appears to be your taste - to any dance music fan this is far from abysmal and actually a hell of a groove.

Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart and Elton John should be banned from performing though.

I thought the blues album the Stones did last year was pretty good, so they can stay. It's a real shame that Macca's voice has gone - I saw him about 15 years ago and he was still in good form then. The trouble with Morrissey is that reactionary old men are far less interesting than angry young men. Best to stick on The Queen is Dead and remember what he was.

Yup, agreed… make music 'till you die, if you want… no one is forced to listen. Lots of artists release surprisingly brilliant music late in their career… often after a long spell of so so releases.

I dunno why people think the stones are anything worth seeing, there is effectively a whole band onstage playing the set to cover for the old geezers dwindling talents - Mick's singing has so much autotune and processing applied it's barely him, and Bernard Fowler sings half the set!

Every punk/indie band that I grew up to that then decided to go mainstream and now play generic chart pop.

Paramore and fall out boy are key offenders, and the jury's out with Arctic Monkey's wavey new album..
