Can anyone suggest a free backup/sync software. Im looking at backing up data om a windows PC onto a backup external drive. Rather than having to copy and replace everything each time i backup was just wondering if there is any software i can use to do a sync type backup.
Im no wizz with comoputers so maybe there is something in windows already. Any advice or suggestions appreciated.
I can highly recommend Beyond Compare

Not free, about £20, but for the security and simplicity it brings it's a fair price IMO. I use it to sync a portable drive for taking my work with me and also for backing up my work files to a backup drive, as well as backing up personal media files. Easy to keep track of what you are doing, and reliable file copying.
It means I always have three different physical locations of sync'd files and at least one of those is usually in a different place.
do you use the external drive on other pc's or is it literally to backup what's on your pc 'just in case'?
As recommended on here to me years ago, free and it works.
Syncback by Brightsparks.

Having said that I have recently bought something called Cloud from Currys as I can synch my work laptop and get files from the cloud onto my IPad when I am out, well, that's what they told me anyway.
SyncToy, which is from Microsoft and free, works fine for me, to keep a laptop sync'ed to a network drive. Should work just as well for what you need.
Beware SyncToy - lots of people seem to have problems with lost data.
I use EaseUs - free and bloody good.
I've tried loads in our office but found Puresync to be the most reliable and easiest for other office numpties to use
Free version won't allow back up of opened files but apart from that is the same as the Pro version

Thanks for the reply folks, lots to look into.
wwaswas its a backup of two separate computers, laptop and desktop.
Also look at Network attached storage - plugs into your router and will automatically backup both machines on an incremental basis.
If you want to do it via usb port them look at the standard windows backup software - it;ll do incremental backups on demand,
