I'm looking for a general purpose backpack for about £50-£75. I need to transport a laptop and a few other bits.

Any good experiences?

I just got one of these and it has a compartment that will fit a 15inch laptop and plenty of space for other stuff. Found it comfortable for the ride to work and plenty of space for what I need. under your budget too

That looks pretty good for commuting! I forgot to mention that I won't be using it for riding....

I use one of these

Very tough, pretty big and stable to carry.

I also use it for bivvy trips.

Have a look at the 'Gourdon' range of dry-rucsacs from Alpkit.
