Because I'm aware quite a few of you lot are into this kind of thing:

On Sunday 27th September at some time between 4 pm and 4.30 pm, an Avro Vulcan XH558 will fly into and out of Manchester Airport en route to the Southport Air Show. The Vulcan bomber was the mainstay of Britain's airborne nuclear deterrent and operated as a conventional bomber in the 1982 Falklands conflict. The XH558 was manufactured at Woodford in 1960 and served with the Royal Air Force until 1992. It has been returned to flight condition and is now used for flight displays.

We hope you will forgive any disturbance caused and hope that you will enjoy the sight of this unique locally manufactured historical aircraft passing through.

Community Relations, Manchester Airport

We had it fly over the Big Bike Bash during the prize giving. It is an awesome bit of kit.

Last Saturday I got a great view of it as it flew over when I was in the pub beer garden enjoying a pint. Guess it was on its way back to Brize. Certainly better than the view I got of it a couple of weeks before when we froze our asses off on the top of White Horse hill waiting for it to fly over the Uffington show.

Last weekend it was busy flying over me at the Goodwood Revival, Sat 4pm and Sun 3pm 😀
The noise and the feeling as it lights those engines is truly special, i was giggling my head off!

It's actually really quiet and stealthy when it's front end on to you and then it goes overhead, pulls up and puts in the power and you get deafened! 🙂

Is there any way of knowing in advance which end they're taking off from? Is it possible to find out on Sunday morning?

Have a look and see what direction the other flights are coming in at. Prevailing wind is still from the west so chances are it'll be coming in over Stockport and taking off towards Knutsford.

Is XV 558 the actual one that was involved in the Falklands bombing, and the book of the same name?

I grew up next to RAF Waddington and they used to fly over every day - every time I got really excited - mental piece of kit!

Strangely enough my nextdoor neighbour was involved in its development back in the 50's/60's.

No, because Rowland White's book is called 'Vulcan 607' 😉

XH558 is the airframe the RAF flew until, ooooh, I can't remember now.....

Wonderful. I saw one at an air show back in 1984 when I was very young, incredible machine. I wasn't quite prepared for the shaking I got as it turned it's engines toward the crowd.

Now the Lightning... That WAS a plane.

We went to see it but in the wrong place. I completely forgot it was making a flypast of its birthplace at Woodford and went to Werneth Low.

However in the distance we saw it make its way over Manchester airport and fly over the runway, it then flew up and banked towards Southport airshow.

We did see a Dakota DC3 very low over Winterhill yesterday when riding around Rivi.

The Dakota was at Southport yesterday, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight along with a Spitfire and a Hurricane. First time I have heard those old fighter engines in real life, they really do sound fantastic.

The Blades acrobatic display was superb. A commercial organisation but all ex-Red Arrows pilots and amazingly skilful.

The Eurofighter Typhoon was something else. It arrived unannounced and silently but as it turned its tail towards us with the afterburners on the noise was incredible. It set off a car alarm and my 4 year old son burst into tears. I didn't realise a fighter could be so agile. Apparently it can accelerate from 200 to 700 knotts in 30 seconds! Simply stunning.

If that's the one that had to land in Brazil, it's at the museum of flight at East Fortune in East Lothian.

I was grinning like a ten year old when the typhoon did it's routine!
I've seen it on video lots of times but didn't think It was that nimble. I really wish they would allow supersonic flight for airshows.

Saw a seaplane flying over Delamere this afternoon from the Southport direction, what was it? Later on also saw 3 old fighters flying in formation along the light aircraft path that goes over my house, didn't sound like a spitfire but was one of them a ME109?

I went to Woodvale Aerodrome, just outside Southport. Saw allsorts of things. The helicopter display guys were there, a Spitfire landed, Red Arrows gave a private display, what could have been a ME109 flew over, then last of all the Vulcan flew over at tree height for some wing wobbling. Much better than going to the show, and it was free!!!

Had a nice surprise last night about 5:15pm, travelling north on the M5 around junction 9 as the Vulcan came straight down the motorway at about 5000ft, was an awesome sight seeing it, my 2 boys were equally impressed 😀

Lucky enough to see it last weekend when it flew over Sandhurst. No idea where it had been.

Years since I last saw one. They used to regularly practice their low level flying where I walked to school.
