I don't understand the problem with avatars. They can add them without any impact on the space used for threads by utilising all that space on the right which is currently wasted with adverts.

how do you think they pay for the forum?

maybe they could charge peopel a tenner a month to have an avatar?

You're still not explaining what the advantages are.

Ok.. here's the official policy we have drawn up on the use of avatars.. We've spent many hours in a darkened room thinking hard about this very issue. We appreciate the pros and cons of having them on this forum from look and feel to server loads.. Positioning and which file formats can and can't be used..

We concluded thus....

They are rubbish!

I'm not bothered about avatars one way or the other, but it would be nice to have the profile pic back again, and proper space there for your email address and other such nonsense...

As a visual aid to remembering an individual or to differentiate ones self from an individual with a similar name, to imply a degree of personality or humanity to an otherwise anonymous internet user etc etc etc.

I think the lack of them makes this place much nicer

Must admit I'd probably find it easier to remember people and meet them out and about if I could see their face, but people never use their face and therefore its justa waste of time.

Allowing pictures in sigs is totally different from avatars, that's the main problem there.
