AVG ground my two systems to a halt. Avast seems faster but I've not had it on for 12 months yet, so hard to tell how it will behave later - AVG didn't start off slow either.

I have Avira. It's a lot quieter than AVG, and the free one is more configurable. It just gets on with the job.

started to move toward Avast here, after previously being a AVG fan.
Version 9.0 of AVG seems to be quite power hungry, testing Avast to see if it's any better...

I aked the same question a couple of weeks ago. AVG was fine until the latest version was downloaded, this, as has been said above, ground my computer to a halt. I am now a happy user of Avast.

Been running Avast at home and at work for nearly 4 years. No problems at all.

Wot Z1ppy said. I always used AVG on all our PC's at home, but 9 does seem to be a bit of a resource hog. I have moved to Avast and all seems well so far.

lol, yeah that is pretty good for waking you up! There's an option somewhere in the prefs to disable the sound effect.

I used AVG up until last month when I changed to MSE. It seems okay but not used it for that long, also have Spybot-Search and Destroy though I don't monitor it.

Geoff, Microsoft Security Essentials runs fine on mine. I got rid of Avast ages ago and replaced it with AVG after it ground the pooter to a halt. I then got rid of AVG after that did an even better job of preventing viruses by preventing the PC from running.

MSE seems to be running much more efficiently than anything else I've ever used. It just seems to get on with the job without making a fuss about it. There's no bells and whistles on it, but it's only trying to stop viruses, not save the world.

It'd be GRRRRRRREAT if Avast! actually did shout (in a piratey voice I think) whenever it updated, or found anything

Doesn't it have the Knight Rider voice?

"Virus database has been updated Michael"
"WARNING: A virus has been detected"
etc

(You can always turn it off in the settings)

Avast has picked up Trojans on websites that AVG has missed here.

Also very happy with MSE and it's way less "shouty" than the alternatives.

I've got mine turned off - don't think it's really supposed to be the knightrider, just happens to sound a bit the same (def doesn't call me Michael)

but imagine if they had Brian Blessed in full "Gordon's Alive?!" mode doing it all 😆

MSE could be an option, not a great lover of microsoft but if it works it's worth using

Assuming you're running Windows on the PC then I'd use MS Security Essentials. It's free, comes out well in security tests and doesn't impact on your PC performance.

Yeah, I just mentally add the "Michael" bit every time I hear it.

I'm keraaazy like that 😀

"So should you rely on Microsoft Security Essentials for free protection? I'd say no, unless you strongly value the Microsoft name. My own testing suggests that you'll do better with one of the other free anti-malware solutions such as AVG Anti-Virus Free or avast! antivirus Home Edition."

I built two identical (low spec) machines for grandparents a few years ago. One now has has AVG and the other AVAST. The Avast machine is far quicker,(the AVG machine is almost unusable). I use Avast, and like it as it does not intrude, but don't know how good the protection is.

TBH, for the kind of stuff I do, I have never had a problem with virus's. I think a decent backup strategy is much more important.

Exactly like Avast then but the comments are true.

Why would anyone trust Microsoft to provide software to protect them from the security holes in Microsoft software?
