and if so, what happens on the second round of voting if the one person I voted for gets eliminated? where does my vote go? thanks.

yes and it is no longer counted as they are eliminated

If you only vote for one candidate, which is allowed, your vote stays with that candidate.

you can vote for just one if you want. If the candidate is eliminated, just like with the current system, your vote goes in the bin

ps if there are 5 candidates only vote for 4 as the last round always has 2 in it. so number of votes = candidates - 1

This seems to be a common misconception with AV.
You have the option to vote for more than one candidate, it is not compulsory.
