Astra or Ashtray? 😉

Astra drives nice but not as good as the focus, loses money faster which can be good or bad depending on the age of car your buying.

Personally unless you are buying new for company and taking advantage of the corporation tax relief, i'd go the bit extra for the bigger diesel if estate, fine if hatch.

are you buying new or used?

I've just recently bought a 2004 astra van with the 1.7cdti engine. Given that its two generations on from the astra I owned i the late eighties its feels surprisingly familiar. Eager to go is a straight line, less accomplished at steering or stopping. Its very economical though, for me the point of astras in estate / van form is its the biggest boot attached to the cheapest, most fuss free car pulled along by the most economical engine. I can coax 600miles out of a £60 tank of fuel.

On the downside - common rail diesel engines are very complex and there are lots of electronics that are vulnerable and difficult to diagnose when they go wrong. More difficult still as the diagnostic codes can be complete red herrings.

i'd go the bit extra for the bigger diesel if estate

for all the difference the extra 50kg would make I wouldn't bother
