After a few years of foot pain following exercise, the Xrays have come back and I've got arthritis in my MCP joint.

There's no way I want to stop riding so I'm looking to do whatever I can to stop it getting worse. The logical first step is some decent new footwear.

So my question is, money no object, what are people's recommendations on qaulity MTB shoes?

fbk - not maybe what you want to hear, but I had mine fused last September after many years of pain eventually getting in the way of normal life (age 44 now). Quite a sore op and a few weeks of painful recovery, but was back on the bike after 8 weeks, fine after 3 months. Had the screws removed in Feb and now pain free and no impact on walking, gait etc. for me a great success. feel free to mail me if you want.

Cheers

iainc - thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Mine's not having too much impact on life at the moment but will only get worse so it's great to hear positive results from surgery. I'm hoping I can stave off the scalpel for a while yet though...

fbk - you're welcome. I staved off for a couple of years - it stemmed from a windsurfing/rock encounter over 20 yrs ago and I was quite reluctant about getting the op. Still a bit weird to have no movement rather than limited and sore movement. Also a bit strange to have one big toe a bit shorter than the other 😆

IMO hang off till it is really bugging you, then try and get a surgeon that knows his stuff. I was lucky having BUPA through work and could pick a guy with a good track record, but I think they are all pretty good probably.

Cheers

The MTP (metatarsophalangeal) joint is the toe joint. The MCP (metacarpophalangeal) joints are in the hand. Not for reasons of pedantry, but in case you want to search for info on the web. Might be worth speaking to an orthotist for advice. I guess they would probably recommend a good fit and a stiff sole to keep the joint relatively immobile.

griffin - you are absolutely right of course. fbk - Google 'big toe fusion' it was my friend 😀

I have, and still do, wear orthotics, eventaully though, fusion was my best solution.

Oops! 😳 You're quite right!

Long weekend, very tired and I had both Xrayed at the same time (MCP and MTP joint!) hance my other post...

Maybe I'll just start again 🙂
