Ah yes if you get a bad one they can be nasty. I was thinking more because they filter feed do they build up toxic substances

My auntie Eileen was almost fatally poisoned by an "off" mussel. Too ugly for me to eat. Ghastly things - just a vehicle for a nice sauce IMO.

Possibly, yes.

The problem with them is that they filter feed which means that they collect all the pollutants from the water and concentrate them. That's why they so frequently make people sick - like my Dad for instance, who loves them.

I would not eat them a lot if I were you. If I were me (which I am) I'd never eat them cos they are disgusting.

I have long suspected that many of the regulars on here are eating too many mussels. It's the bioaccumulation of mercury that does it.

I used to love muscles, must have had a few bad ones one evening and was very, very sick. Have never been able to eat them since, they make throw up for hours if I eat them now. 🙁

I love mussels (and all shellfish). With chopped shallots, butter, half a bottle of cider = cheap, easy and tasty meal. Never occurred to me that they might be dangerous. I'm sure if you eat them all day, every day for 30 years they possibly, might just could be... but other than that, enjoy.
That said, I never order them in a restaurant, I'd rather check them personally.

They can be as a one-off, as well as long term accumulation. It depends heavily on where they are from. I think there is a certification system to prove they are from clean water but I don't know that many people know about it...

Too many mussels can be a bugger when you're dragged across a reef covered in them.
