Did anyone else here see the latest party political broadcast by the Tories - the one on the East Africa appeal?

It shocked the hell out of me by (1) dissing the way party political broadcasts always bad-mouth the opposing party and (2) suggesting that famine is more important than political division in the UK.

Is this a clever device to push the Tories as humanist good guys, or did they actually say something decent this time?

No, I do think it is. I was just surprised the Tories came out with it.

They were fairly obvious in trying to say

"look, we,'re not the nasty party"

I agree.

Dave and his chums were trying very hard to look normal and caring.

But what they were saying essentially is 'we usually play a game' or 'our strategies usually focus on dissing the other guy'... which is something we all know but no-one at the upper echelons of either party normally says.

Not sure what to think of it really. I mean, on the one hand it's a hysterically cynical thing to do, and I wouldn't have to work too hard to be disgusted by the way they've politicised charity. On the other hand, you never know, it might help.

Of course they won't manage to keep it up, and someone will find out that they're actually turning famine babies into cluster bombs targeting kittens, probably.

Come to think of it, most of them did look pretty shifty even on a 'charity' political broadcast...

They're OK in Scotland - nearly (but not quite) voted for them as they were the only party with a credible higher education policy. They're also axiomatically commited to the union, and are / were being lead by a harmless old spinster rather than a gastropod, so its not all bad.

I don't know what disappoints me most; the Tories using a famine in a part of the world that can't vote for or against them to score cheap political brownie points, or the galactical scale of the dimwittery involved in falling for it.

Which explains why this thread was posted as a question!

No, they're a bunch of Cs. Always will be. I'm more concerned that the other lot still seem to be doing their best to make them look like the only option this country has.

Thanks, crikey, but I'm still on Spot the Dog's Magic Birthday.

Besides, the 'Red' in Red Riding Hood unsettles me. It suggests Socialism. And isn't Socialism scary? I mean, a society that looks after its populace! Terrifying.

Stop it. Stop it. I can't take any more...

Yep. So Ok that one of the candidates for the leadership of the party in Scotland wants to disband the Tories in favour of a new Right-wing party.

"Gay marrige", a reason for bigots, and idiots to have a new whipping boy or boys to have a go at.

As opposed to the union of two people who are in love with each other to share their lives togethjer in Daves utopian world, where he totally fails to understand him and his lot are seriously more richer than all us, and the sad people who actually voted him into a job.

No really, they are OK in Scotland, inasmuch as they're completely unelectable until the end of time. Perfect tories really.

(I do like Annabel Goldie though, she deserves better)

I thought 'they' had Gay Marriage already, don't get why the Tories are suddenly all over it like a bad rash, less than 1/2 per cent of the population are Gay, it's an irrelevance er unless you are of course, no disrespect intended, just do not trust Tories..

Hook line and sinker.

Not in my case.

I've never voted for them. Voted for the others a couple of times though, but that didn't make much difference either.

Only Tory I've ever had a soft spot for was Michael Heseltine and that was basically because he looked like my granddad... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Any party/party leader, who accepts large sums of money from developers and then produces proposed legislation to help...."developers"..... is corrupt. End of story really.

Sod them...sod him.....they are pigs gorging at the trough of freedom while the rest of us are left to go to hell, or meekly help these pigs gorge themselves some more. And if we don't help these pigs to eat all the puddings aswell, we are somehow unpatriotic!

Straight to hell boys!

For a brief, wonderful moment today I thought Ken Clarke was going to run on stage and beat David Cameron to a paste. All party political issues should be settled by square go.

I'd like to see the election scrap between Dave and Ed. I'm guessing it would be a long upper middle class fight, but still it would be well worth watching.

Well, these figures suggest that it's actually more like 1.5% if you include Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual people.

Even at 1%, that's still 480,000 people. How the hell are 480,000 people an 'irrelevance'?

And I'd reckon that those figures are at best 'conservative'; ie, many folk don't disclose their true sexuality for their own reasons which often involve fear of being ostracised from their communities, alienated at work and from friends/family etc. I'd imagine the true figures are much higher.

Anyway, regardless of the actual numbers, all people are relevant in our society.

Switched over within a second so never caught the jist of it... phew!

Can't trust Tories . Sounds like a gimmick to me and more likely a distraction from something significant they want to down play, like... oh I don't know, maybe putting the boot into Human rights legislation?

The jist seemed to be: we're usually pretty cynical when we make these broadcasts. We normally throw mud at the opposition. That's how it's done, and how we've always done it. Not any more though. No, now we're really concerned about something way more important and we've all personally given money to the East Africa appeal to show that we really, really care.

Like I said, it's an interesting approach...

@Elfinsafety (Wonders does he ride single speed)

It means 98.5% of the population don't care, so in a de mock cracee they shouldn't rate a mention unless there was some other Agenda, like creating the impression a bunch of lying efwits give a damn.

In fact 480,000 is probably only a mere fraction of the illegals here at present, if we want to get into a serious Daily Mail discussion on the evils present in the land..

bit like admitting to being a conservative then.

I'm peaceful and easy going. I care little for what other people do and how they choose to live their lives. But I ****ing hate the ****ing scum who are self-serving **** stains on the bed sheets of the common man. Call me potty mouth dave is a smug greasy tosser, in bed with the bankers and tax dodgers. ed the irrelevant is no better, just maybe slightly more useless than dangerous which is fine, he'll never achieve anything that gives him any power.

You only have to go to parts of Manchester, london, Brighton, and now Liverpool and quite a few other places, to see lots of gay and lesbians, enjoying their new freedom from the bigots.

Some places straight men seem be the minority.

It's been like that for years now, why should it suddenly be relevant to Tories is my point, not wether anyones sexuality should make them relevant as a voter.. And it's not just here in the UK, other places like Germany which were far more hostile to Gay people are and have been for most of this millennium far more tolerant, visit Cologne, Hamburg, even Munich, times have changed long since, typical Tories trying to climb on a bandwagon that left years ago.

I think (as the broadcast underlines) it's because they care so damn much - or because the easiest victories are achieved when the battle's over and you're still holding the flag.

I'm fed up with listening to them still blame everything on Labour, we are where we are, not that i'm exonerating Labour, but they've been in power for 18 months and i want to hear what they are going to do about it rather than whose fault it is, because frankly it seems like they don't have a clue!

Wow bit of a rant that! feel better now though. 8)
