Just found this very very nice wall lamp. Prob is the wife won't let me get if unless it is dimmable. It takes a std energy saver lightbulb which I know you can get dimmable version of. However, does the wall light unit itself have to be dimmable too?

It's the bulb, not the light fitting that determines the "dimmability".
Our energy saver bulbs are not dimmable but there may be some out there that are.
