its a Merkur Futur Safety Razor Brushed Chrome.
has anyone got any experience in using this razor??
if so can you tell me what its like, how long the blade lasts and how to shave with it as apparently its different to using a mach 3 blade??
cheers

is it for styling your futuristic merkin?

I have one of those, although I don't shave any more. It was much better than a cartridge razor. I used to use Feather blades, found them the sharpest, but they'll get you if you aren't careful. You'll need a brush and a proper cream as well to do it properly. I liked Musgo. Blades lasted 3 or 4 shaves, but only cost about 50p each.
Yep - I've got the Merkur Vision razor.
It's a really nice piece of engineering, and the blades are as cheap as chips (bought 20 boxes of 5 Wilkinson Sword blades on eBay for about £15!!) ... but I have to say that I don't use it all the time for one main reason
- I find it impossible to have a quick shave with it, as I come out looking like an RTA victim. Time and patience is the order of the day for me. As I'm generally in a hurry in the morning I tend to reach for the Mach3 (which I kept as a backup). It's harder to use in tight spaces like the nostril area, so the Mach3 gets pressed into action there also.
On the plus side it's cheap as far as consumables are concerned, and it gives a fantastically close shave, especially when removing weekend-beard-growth.
I use a Merkur something-or-other (discontinued older DE razor). I'll echo what Adders69 says - you can't rush with one of these. If you typically spend 2-3 minutes shaving with a Mach 3 you'll probably find you need about 10 minutes with a DE razor. Once you get the hang of it you can adjust the blade to be a bit closer and get a really smooth shave.
My main tip is to not bother with a fancy razor stand, instead store your razor head down in a pot of oil (baby oil is about right). This will make the blades last a lot longer (prevents micro-rust).

Would love a Merkur but am still using my "experiment" razor to see if I can get along with using a safety razor. Not found any problems with the Wilkinson Sword Classic. Don't like cheap supermarket blades but Wilkinson Sword ones are fine. Use it for every shave.

Got a merkur, but it's not the Futur one. Really good to use, although as above terrifyingly sharp when the blades are brand new.
I've got the Futur model.
A pleasure to use. It's worth getting a proper brush. I use the Merkur blades which cost about £5 for 10.
The shave seems closer than with a Mach 3 and my skin seems less irritated.
But as others have said, don't rush or you'll end up cut to bits.
cheers all !!
can you recommend a good shaving foam/gel to use with it??
i use the Gillette stuff in the orange bottle at the moment.
is the brush and soap thing a good idea??
I use this:

and this:

Generally better than foam in a can.
thanks for that i will have a look!!
is it still worth using a face scrub beforehand too??
Its 40quid ❗
Get some bic ones!! 😉
tom ive tried most of the supermarket razors and always end up with ingrowing hairs and shaving rash etc.
you would not believe the amount of stuff i have tried in the past 15 years!!
is it still worth using a face scrub beforehand too??
I do occasionally. Mostly I just rinse with warm water and use the brush.
Thanks **** I haven't got wierd skin, a plastic Wilko 3-blade shaver gives me a nice smooth shave.
It is the most fabulous razors I've ever experienced.
Used to get shaving rash - no more
Used to get in-growing hairs - no more
Used to pay a gazillion pounds for 8-bladed nonsense - no more
Used to get through masses of shaving gel/cream to 'cushion' my face - no more
One draw-back, you can't take it on a plane in hand luggage.
One tip - don't buy the expensive Solinger Titanium blades, they're crap. Stick with cheapo 'double sided blades' boots/tesco/sainsbury's own brand are all you need.
You will have to practice a bit, start with the blade gap at the smallest setting (twist the handle to vary) and gradually open it until you reach your optimum. Mine's set at 3. If I put it on 4 I look like I've been attacked by a pitbull.
I use King of Shaves green goo. Brilliant.
Good luck!
Ben
Been using a futur for about 5 months and love it, feels like proper mans' stuff! Tried going back to my old favourite a sensor exel and it felt like cheap cr@p, vids on you tube are quite good if you feel totaly clueless, so impressed with mine I'm getting my mate one for his crimbo, they will bite you though if your not careful, you're skin feels magic after a shave I thing it is because there is no lubrastip putting gunk down after the blade passes, I'm using the trumpers soap and it is really nice and lathery, also got mine set at number 2, DO IT! you will bleed but it's worth it!!
PJ.
I used to end up with horrendous shaving rash and masses of ingrown hairs.
Switched to using a cutthroat - not a stropped one, one that takes half of one of those double-sided blades in a sliding cartridge.
That helped, but as described by others, rushing tended to result in me looking like I'd had my face pushed into a mincer (the butcher's variety, not the other type.)
Then I solved the problem altogether and grew a beard.
Then I solved the problem altogether and grew a beard.
Amen brother beard, amen. It's the way of the future 🙂 And the money saved on razors can go on bike bits!! 8)
Here you go richie b
Fantastic should ave known all human knowledge is here
I moved across to the Merkur Progress Adjustable Safety Razor and it is brilliant. Much cheaper to run than a Mach 3, gives a better shave and I dont get shaving rash.
I do however agree that it is not a razor to rush with.
