Potentially found a place in the Alps - it's old but not a wreck, similar to a place you'd find in the UK that's been lived in for a long time by an elderly couple so needs "modernising". Has mains electric, sewage and water but doesn't have any heating / hot water.

Would stick electric water and heating in and have wood burner - wouldn't bother with central heating as only a small place and no mains gas in the area so would be oil tank. Needs no particular structural work to walls / roof and would do minimal knocking through etc... to keep costs down.

Has anyone attempted anything remotely similar and have any experiences and ideas of costs to share? Local builder looked at it with me and was talking around 1500 Euros per m2 which seems incredible - initial living area is about 75m2.

Furthermore the work is likely to be next summer so if any tradespeople on here want an extended mountain biking holiday I'm sure we could sort something out?!!

Happy to do work on it myself (with limited skills) but seems may then take forever and potentially cost more in the long run anyway?!

Have you actually bought said place yet?

I know some friends of mine bought a place in the alps and it took just under a year to go through, and cost them considerably more than they thought it would (I think there was a miriad of local taxes, that obviously are not included in the selling price)

Only a wood burning stove? In -30 are you sure?? Would it really be cheaper when you take in to consideration having to keep it lit constantly and refilling it?

Electric radiators and electric hot water tank - economy 7 style so water heats up over night. Either that or electric underfloor heating?
Most places I've lived out there are exactly the same as alternative is oil fired central heating and oil tank.
Not bought it yet but had a few visits so getting tempted...!

Ah right, I see 😐

Maybe withdraw my offer till 2012 then. By that stage the 'limpics will be on though so I might hang around the UK for the Summer 🙂
