The mrs is selling her Freelander. She got it from her dad's partner who had it from new. Full service (originally BMW, recently at a local independent)

I'm not against leasing- if it was 100 a month I'd do it. 130 is over the tipping point IMO.

Freelander? markhoracekuk@yahoo.com

No preference. My ideal is a car owned by someone that had ALL servicing carried out by a main dealer. Tyres still premium brand etc etc. i.e. someone who was fleeced by stealers...then I pick up the car. Isn't that everyones ideal secondhand purchase? 🙂

Err . . . No.

Main dealer equals minimum servicing to keep the perceived cost of ownership down.

So you buy from someone who says they did all the servicing themselves?

Main dealers replace and charge for many things that are slightly worn 'just in case Sir'. I think you are thinking of fleet deal servicing..

Yes, I only ask as my fiancée dad has an Alfa dealer (your in Manchester I think) were not too far away.

I got a Celica 190 on a 53, 50k miles, full Toyota service history, new discs and pads, matching tyres, immaculate throughout (one tiny scratch on glove box) 1 previous owner (local) for £2300. She part exchanged it for an Alfa GT. People who I have given a lift too have all commented they thought it was a £6k car. There was a nice enough Fiesta in the other week and he's said there's often BMW 3-series coming in at the moment, I test drove one but it wasn't for me.

Depends on the car, but plenty of models I would prefer to see regularly serviced by an independent specialist rather than main dealer

Yes I'm in Manchester.. Celica 190 - yep its the sort of car I'd have. Obviously been cared for.

Anything really in that vein.

Receipts, not 'stamps' is what you want.
I know. I go on alot of criteria but as a rule of them, a 6yr old car with three indie stamps tends to have been treated how it sounds. Indie servicing (unless its an interesting car) tends to be done on a 'it really needs this replacing' basis I've found...or rectifying an issue cost(s).

My current car probably fitted your criteria, while it had had 3 owners the last 2 were for only 8 months, with the first owner having it for over 8 years.

535i with full BMW dealer service and 80k.

Sorry, but after working in both main dealer & independants, I'd go for the independant service history every time, they rely on repeat business, in general main dealers have a captive customer base & care less, get them in & out ASAP attitude, that's why they have time allowances for every job they do. Independants want them done right, one independant I worked at used to go as far as removing all the breather pipes to clean them inside.

My car has to go to a main stealer now, it came back a few weeks ago with the brakes still binding, even though I'd asked them to fix it while it was there, it was VERY obvious they needed looking at & the aerial missing (collect & drop off service)

Dazz I hear you but if it was my money it'd have indie servicing, if it was someone elses money it'd be main dealer servicing.

My experience of main dealer servicing (outside of the 3rd year) is they come to you and say 'Sir, we noticed this is low, theres a leak, this needs doing, this is a 'safety item and recommend', 'we've just priced up the cost of the service and parts for you'...

I'd certainly not choose to buy a car serviced by the local main dealers who left a rag in my fuel tank after sorting out a problem with the fuel gauge sender. Oh, and that was their second attempt after failing the first time. Local independent has always done a far better job.

See, I smell a rat when a 50k miles car has had new discs. Done a lot of braking, has that car...... Poor driving or lots of short town journeys? The type of short journeys that kill engines?

That's my line of thought, just saying like. 🙂

You've never experienced Toyota main dealer servicing have you?

I booked my old car in for a MOT the day before it was to go into a Toyota service (I'd battered the service dept down on price for a stamp) 😆

I told the Service Manager this and he basically tried his best to rearrange the MOT to them. I told him no (as I was half-suspicious as well).

The car passed. The discs were recent as were the pads. The next day the dealership told me they were pricing up the cost of the 'service' to include safety items etc etc as the discs and pads were dangerously low......the tyres also were advised needed changing soon. They gave me percentages '80% worn' etc.

I was gobsmacked and put them right. Imagine your in your 50's etc and believe what a main dealer tells you as they are the 'experts' and you aren't a mechanic...

Christ on a bendybus. I know what you're like with warranty claims on bloody mountain bike forks.

I'd pity any dealership you ever bought a car from. I think when they eventually lost the script and beat you to death with a torque wrench, after listening to the evidence, any judge would probably let them off with it. Only expressing surprise that they didn't do it sooner

Its the way they handled me when I went into the dealership to pay my £110 for the oil/filter and stamp that surprised me. A sort of 'keep you waiting, then take you through a quick train of process where you feel compelled without stopping for thought'. 'We are preparing your invoice for you now Sir' I think was the line, I said whoa, can you stop/rewind.

The process involved lots of pausing, looking at me, explaining slowly that the car needed the extra work. A wait again for a Service Manager to be free. Almost as though they were making me feel bad.

When he came out he quickly realised I wouldn't hand over my card 😆

I think you want something that your wallet can't/won't back up.

So you could go for a new car, because that will be reliable and hassle-free. But you will only pay peanuts. Cheap and reliable. Are you sure you want a Citroen? They tend to only meet one of the above requirments...

Good luck searching, I'd be interested to know what you end up doing.

Given the choice, I'd buy a car with a service history filled out by hand and a bundle of receipts stapled to each page, rather than a dealer serviced car. Then I can see exactly what was replaced, rather than wonder what was and wasn't replaced at each main dealer stamp.

I'm wary of dealers (and independents) as if you try and haggle on price then things like pollen filters/glow plugs/coolant get 'missed' and you end up with just a basic oil and filter change.

Two of the last three cars I've owned have not had a cabin air filter installed at all, at least that explained why the dash got so grimy. Both dealer/independent serviced.

The point about premium tyres on a used car has some merit - see lots of 3+year old premium cars running around on miss matched, worn out tyres with wierd names. All the evidence you need to know the cars been neglected.
The dealer servicing but is misguided logic tho - a good specialist indipendant is what your after.

I've never bought a new car and the majority have been private sale that come with itemised receipts. One Subaru for instance had receipts for 500 quid annual services 😮 madness.

If I was to buy a car with handwritten/owner history with receipts I'd need to understand that he is a competent and qualified mechanic. If I was buying a MG GTB from a keen enthusiast I'd go this route.

Otherwise I'd view the seller as a skinflint/tight ass and I'd adjust my price offered thus wiping out the money he'd saved so what's the point in DIY servicing in this respect?

The Aygo/c1/107 is/are awesome cars. A true sucessor to the likes of original mini and Dyane etc. Overpriced but at c110 a month for 2yrs your laughing. I'm down to 120 @ month at the moment on them with a dealer....the closer to the end of the month the better the price becomes...

Back to home serviced cars. Out of interest do you think the chap uses Continental replacement tyres or Event/Linglong? I guess the later. Car tyres are very important to me.

If someone has been servicing their car regularly over the years and its still running, then that is a pretty good indicator they are competent. Qualified...you don't need to be qualified to drain some oil out, replace a few filters, flush the coolant, change the brake pads. Just practically minded and have your head screwed on.

If you are looking at bangernomics, then obviously you will be looking at lower value cars with the majority of the depreciation already lost. I think you'll find the costs saved from labour charges are equal to or several times less than the price you are paying 🙂

Er, no. Seller would send you on your way and wait for someone less ridiculous to come along!

'Car tyres are very important to me'

This is a joke right? I will only buy premium tyres, but given all your other criteria this should be so far down your list on a second hand car! Get your wallet and buy the tyres you want if they are so important! Your waiting for a set of circumstances that are never going to happen. Sounds like you are going round in circles trying to talk yourself out of any possible purchase.

see, the title couldn't be just 'anyone know of a cheap car for sale'...Oh no, it had to be some sort of contrived title showing how much knowledge you have on a topic.

You're a marketeers dream, apart from the bit where you have to spend money.

I've got a van for sale for £1500. 1 owner, 1.7 diseasel astra van on an '06 plate. 125k miles, new tyres all round, painted in Pest control white. I'm not selling it to you though, because you're a fool.....

He wouldn't have bought it anyway Flange. Because you didn't specify what make of tyres. The first thing any shrewd, thinking buyer looks at when purchasing a vehicle. You can ascertain their true providence by kicking them

I'd far, far rather see a car with regular services at a good, well-reviewed independent garage. That way you're getting a proud owner-mechanic with perhaps 20+ years of experience and a reputation to preserve, rather than a YTS trainee at twice the price.

I've been lied to on too many occasions by main dealers. The final straw was a Vauxhall garage telling me that my brake pads were "marginal" when they were almost brand new. Always makes me wonder what other corners get cut to make their numbers.

Let me get this right - I get to kick Hora?

Mark - its yours. £50, collection only. And I'll fit R888's all round....

I often over-look any major mechanical problems on a vehicle if its got decent tyres on it. Some vehicles I've bought don't even have an engine but man alive do those tyres look good sat on the driveway. Premium....

Don't forget to log on and check every advisory logged at the MOT on the new online system to check it's been resolved.

You'd have been far better fixing the Puma for a small outlay. The advisories for slight corrosion/deterioration would have been fine for the next year or two at least I'd bet with a bit of waxoyl.

Rather than offhandedly dismissing everything for utterly random, totally illogical, completely fathomless reasons, why not make a list of what you do want. Here, I'll help you out

1. The moon
2. Preferably on a stick. Actually... must be on a stick. A diamond encrusted, platinum stick
3. Must be free. oh.... and include at least a 12 month warranty

For god's sake Hora, just go and buy a nice Panda from a dealer.
Cort's in Bury have got loads of the bloody things in.
Low miles, full history, choice of colours etc.
You'd get one for £3500, probably with a years w'tee, tank of fuel and a few other bits and bobs thrown in.
The one I looked at recently for the eldest daughter had four new Pirellis and seemed bloody well looked after too.

You'd be daft not to.

I take resentment at this statment just because the car is home serviced doesn't me bugger all when it comes to tyres. I have always serviced my own cars as i refuse to pay other for something i can easily do and for a lot cheaper and not only that i have had such bad experiances of garages when i have used them that do my best not to. I have always fitted good tyres to my cars as they are your point of contact.
You would have liked the car we just bought. A 57 plate renault megane 1.5dci estate with 28k on the clock and was an ex mobility car and had the servie print out to go with it. oh and the tyres on it are contis at the back (proberly orginals) and uniroyals at the front.
