Just looking to hire a car for the week. Everywhere I've looked they're asking for, if not the initial payment, then the deposit/insurance to be be paid on credit and not debit cards.

Trouble is I don't have one. I've got plenty of cash to cover any deposit etc, but all the T&C's say credit card payment only. And trying to actually speak to a human being seems all but impossible.

Does anyone know any companies that will do car hire on a debit card? Any advice and experiences welcome.

Eh? Use Enterprise. They always took my debit card.

enterprise, eurocar, Hertz and probably more I cant remember. I hire one from the cheapest at the time whenever I came back from working abroad. Most if not all said I needed a credit card but debit card has always worked so far

That's good to know. I don't have a credit card either.

On a related note, I'm thinking of getting a small van for the week - transit connect etc. How much room for kit/bikes in the back of that?

It's been a while, but I used to hire cars with a debit card - never had the scary credit one - no problem. Used the Arnold Clark garage near me in Liverpool.

Surely there's no issue if it's paid upfront?

I've had the same issue, now have a pre-pay "Credit" card - you have to load the card but it uses Mastercard's network so is identified as a credit card.

Sorted! Cheers all! Enterprise are happy to put the deposit on a debit card!

Bravissimo - that sounds quite reasonable. I normally get my credit from Mashem & ****em pay day loans limited. They charge triple that!!! 😉

Enterprise are a nice iffunny comapny, had a replacement van off them because mine was bashed by a drunk driver, the very freindly young lady gave me a stern talking to about scratching the van, bringing it back dirty, and walked slowly round pointing out all the non exiostent scratches,i signed to say it was ok.

opened the side door and it was full of dead christmas trees branches, obviuosly trhe inside didnt need to be clean.
Oh and different depots have different rates, and cars.

Not so long ago I have hired a car on victoriacars.com with a debit card. The only thing asked was to take a fully comprehensive insurance that they have offered and no problems.
