i'm fed up with driving a great big T5 camper as my daily runner so looking at buying a very cheap runabout for the school runs, day trips up to about 100miles or so, and looking at options based around fuel economy and cheap road tax (30quid) the peugeot 206 sw 1.5hdi seems a good vehicle size and space-wise. i'm looking at cars around 100,000 miles and 10 or so years old.
anyone have any experience of these peugeots, things to look for and all that?
Sold a 206 1.6hdi with 150,000 troublefree miles on the clock, I bought it with 10k on the clock.
It only had 3 major issues and less than good servicing on my part.
Issue 1: Blown turbo after, I guess, overfilling with oil.
Issue 2: Blown turbo after, I know, the garage left some bits lying around before fitting first turbo and changed foc.
Issue 3: Destroyed oil cooler heat exchanger after driving over some debris on the road (driver error).
Beyond that there was some semi regular servicing and a waterpump/timing belt change.
Cracking little motor.
Parents had been one. Really good small car. Good on motorways as well as the extra weight of the diesel ment it was not blown about. Only big issue they had was with the bcm (body control module). Had it for about 10 years.
Drive one about 75 k essentially trouble free motoring and now at 150 k miles
I only change the oil on it every 10 k or so
cannot fit a roof rack to the two door and they do an estate version which would tempt me if buying now
I use a three bar towbar rack without issue on mine
£245 insurance ish and about 60 mph
Not massively comfortable after about three hours IME
Good on motorways as well as the extra weight of the diesel ment it was not blown about.
Good point as I had a newer 208 petrol and it was shite in this regard.
The 1.6 hdi engine is known for eating turbos due to a poor oil feed pipe design. The process to fit a new turbo involves a 12hr flushing of the engine that if not followed to the letter often involves another dead one soon after. I'd stay away or look for 306 etc with the 2.0hdi engine.
Had one with the 2.0hdi engine great little load lugger but god its can be noisy. Id have another but a 1.6 petrol. The the 1.6 diesels have a reputation for lunching themselves bye blocking the turbo oil feed with black gunk.
Me. Awesome. 1.4 is slow as hell. Huge load capacity. Very short 1st gear, but good on motorway.
Fuel hose can perish and let air in. Peugeot replacement kit is expensive but a resourceful person could find the same hose much cheaper. The complicated, wiper linkage could be a weak spot/check they are secure on the splines.
All other wearing out parts same as usual for old cars.
I have only done oil/filter changes and pre-emptive suspension replacement and a clutch replacement.
Mine had been to Morzine and back many times, judging by the lift passes in the boot.
We have had a 1.4 hdi sw estate for 6 years. Engine wise it's great, 145'000 so far. I have replaced the turbo about 10'000 miles ago. Easy job and it was cheap 2nd hand. watch out for the rear axle's bearings. they are bad for wearing out and a total pain to do, to check for it put your hand down between rear tyre and body and check both sides are evenly spaced and wheel isn't sitting off camber, also any clonking/banging from rear could indicate it. comms units are bad for wearing out meaning wipers and lights have a bit of a mind of their own. decent to drive cheap tax and great on fuel.
