Looking for experiences really from those who have ever had their own B+B, or who have one now. We are looking to take one on of our own, probably in the Lake District. Its something we've ummed and ahhed for a few years, but now the kids are older we feel we (probably) have the time and means to give it a crack. We're pretty certain its bloody hard work, with early starts and late finishes, but to those with experience, what are the downsides, what are the upsides, and would you do it again and/or recommend it? Or would you simply avoid it altogether?
I did it in my pub and loved it, some clients are assholes but on the whole its a good deal, and the pleasure of making money while you sleep is fantastic clients return year after year and become friends, yes long hours and hard work especially if you do evening meals or run a bar as well but the added value is where the money is.
Yup, we own Callater Lodge in Braemar and I'm just sitting here having finished loading dishwashers and heading to the rooms once I finish a cup of tea...and STW. Email in profile and very happy to discuss or have a chat over the phone. Honest answer is that it's hard work, but my wife and I are thoroughly enjoying it and do not regret the switch for one moment.
My folks have done it since I was born.
0730 - until about 1000-1100 Guest arrival after 1700. They offer more of a service now they are retired but used to do it as well as being full time teachers. They don't do dinners as the town has plenty of places to feed folk and they appreciate the business.
Get graded, network with other local businesses and associations, assist at events, excel in the local knowledge and stuff to do department and you'll be fine.
julesf7 - looking at your establishment, will def. pencil it in - might be an improvement on where we stayed last visit 🙂
