At about 9.45 last night I was driving the Dunblane to Edinburgh train and just coming towards a red signal in Linlithgow loop when I spotted this. It looked like It was about 500 feet in the air and at first I thought It was either a shooting star or plane on fire . I was pretty sure whatever It was would crash land but going by the story It obviously held Its altitude all the way across the UK.
Probably a once in a lifetime sighting and absolutely stunning.

The Missus saw it on her way home from work. She tried to describe it to me and a meteor was the only thing that came to mind.

No. But have seen one before and it's really cool. Correct me if I'm wrong but were talking about meteorites. So called shooting stars are meteors.

It's a meteor in the sky - a meteriorite is what's left when it lands.

Meteorites are meteors that hit the ground and survive the impact. All meteorites were meteors (and usually meteoroids) on the way down. Not all meteors become meteorites, most of them burn up. As the meteor last night hasn't been found yet, we don't yet know if it became a meteorite or not.

[Edit: damnit too slow. 🙁 ]

Less common that that I'd imagine!

Looking forward to what footage comes to light once people get to work tomorrow and check their CCTV cameras. Even if the cameras aren't pointing skywards there can be some lovely light effects on the ground

I was sitting with my brother in law in Lincolnshire in his living room with the curtains still open and he suddenly jumped up and ran to the window, then ran across the room to the other side of the house to another window to see it disappear. It must have gone from one horizon to the next in less than 10 seconds. He is a military pilot and we were wondering what it would be confirmed to be as either it was super low or travelling super fast and at higher altitude to cover that sort ground in that time frame. We came to the conclusion it had to be a meteor and glad to see confirmed by the other reports in the morning and he wasn't on something!

Gutted I wasn't fast enough off the sofa!

Seen a good few over the years but that one is pretty impressive.
