The last few weeks at the end of the afternoon sees the emergence of loads of tiny white flying things, so tiny and dainty they can be mistaken for ash... but they live!
What are they?

I was trimming my hedge out front yesterday, much of it is Pyrocanthus, and there were thousands of the things all over the leaves, and all over me every time I disturbed them, which was all the time because I was cutting it! They look almost like microscopic white moths. I can’t say I’ve seen them in such numbers before, but I don’t cut it that often, so maybe it’s the time of year?

At least it's not just me then, plenty around in Hertfordshire.
I'm in Warwickshire (near to Stratford Upon Avon) and we're being plagued with them too.
I also thought they were ash but on closer inspection realised they were/are tiny flies.

When asked, I told my granddaughter that they were the angel spirits of all the dead songbirds killed by the squirrels.

Tons by my work site which backs on to railway scrubland and wetland nature reserve, none at home next to grassy park with walnut and lime (tilia not citrus) trees.

Yes I've noticed a load of these things, especially at work which in in Leicestershire.
Also noticed a real increase in people foraging for mushrooms etc. in the forest, never seen such numbers before but think that might be for a different thread.

This. There have been huge numbers of unusual mushrooms in my local ride spot, and also people collecting them every time I ride there, which I've never seen before.
Not seen any of the ashy deathflies though.
