No doubt this will result in a few 'interesting' comments....

Regardless, if anyone else on here has an Evoque with halogen lights, do you suffer from frequent headlight bulb failures?

The original lights are fairly poor and I replaced the bulbs with upgraded Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited, but they are lasting for a few months only then passenger side typically failing.

They are quite easy to change - assuming you have a 10mm spanner or socket at hand, but I'd hoped the bulds would last a bit. Same bulbs in Mrs B's car have lasted so far for 2 years.

Thanks all.

You've admitted that on a public forum?

Did the original ones fail before you "upgraded"?

I have had some posh bulbs (nightbreakers and the phillips things). Both lasted a few months.
I have gone back to local car parts 'standard' bulb. Not changed it in two years.

Wiggles, TBH I have no idea. The car was purchased 2nd hand and I immediately replaced the bulbs with upgraded ones.

My previous car had bi-xenon's, so the standard halogens were pants in comparison.

I'm shocked they do an evoque with halogen bulbs.

Times got a bit tough, so the G55 AMG had to go...obviously!

Aye, right!

I haven’t used nightbreakers for years but found their lifespan to be short. Ring Xenonmax aren’t quite as bright but last a lot longer in my experience.
Don’t think the father in law had any problems with his evoque (standard bulbs)

You might find that the uprated bulbs work at a higher temp and thus exposed to greater thermal shock and fail sooner.
I could be talking pish, in which case I apologise.
Bung a standard bulb back in there and see how long it lasts.

I had Nightbreakers in my EP4 Civic. OK while they lasted (5 months!). Went LED for the price of more NB's.

Like night and day (legality aside...).

Not an Evoque, but my old Ibiza used to regularly pop bulbs. Tried cheap ones, expensive ones; didn't really make much difference except to my wallet.

Then, I found some halogens in Halfords in a green pack. I can't remember if they are called Long Life or Extra Durable or what, but they are billed as tough bulbs that should last longer.
And they really worked. I went from changing bulbs twice a year to not having to change the bulbs at all, once I got those. So, worth a try.

Can't help on the bulb ting but I'm always interested in how one would pronounce Evoque?

Eve-ock or Eve-oak or Ev-ock or Ev-oak?

MTB-idle, I can't help with the pronunciation, for years I read it as "EnVogue", thought it was sponsored by the mag!

Thanks for the feedback re the bulb issue.

For the rest, I'm obviously completely at ease with myself therefore no issues.

I could offer some rhymes, where Coq would rhyme....

🙂

Are you handling them properly ie wearing a glove when you put them in to not contaminate them?

It does surprise me that halogens are still being used at all on anything but bottom spec cars what with all the much better alternatives out there these days.

I recently got a brand new XC60 and that has halogens. Our 10 yr old Mazda 3 has xenons. ❓

Yep you should use gloves. Just grab some of the gloves you have in the salon for when you are dyeing clients hair.

What is the rationale for LEDs being illegal, surely they offer the best (currently illegal) solution?

I think it'll be that LEDs fitted into housings not designed for them are illegal.

+1 FunkyDunc

It's advised that you don't handle the glass area of the bulbs with bare fingers. If you do, oil from your fingers transfers onto the glass hich leads to hotspots and premature failure.

This article explains how: https://itstillruns.com/do-go-bad-touch-them-7371358.html

They are HB3 bulbs which do not actually require you to touch the glass. If I did I would be wearing latex-free gloves in a fetching colour 😳

I am reminded of an episode when I was a youngster. Scene was local hard-scrote trying to pick on one of the group who was slightly effiminate - he was and is a great lad and friend. Scrote thought that this chap would in some way be less 'manly' than he. That was until he received a sharp and beautifully aimed short punch on his Adams Apple. Scrote left well alone after that.

Back to lights...anyone any joy of using LED's in reflector lights?

My LED's are in reflector housings. I have adjusted the beam pattern as immediately after the light spread was too high on the off-side. I was getting flashed by every car passing the other way. Now, hardly any - the same as with halogen bulbs.

The emitted light is far whiter and makes night-time driving far less tiring as it picks up far more on the nearside of the road.

TBH, it's no worse than Audi/BMW/SEAT FR LED or HID's and they are designed that way.

As I understand it any car that comes with them has to have self levelling headlights. ( to avoid blinding people to death )
